Portland Police Bureau recalls .45 caliber Glock weapons after incidents

The Associated Press - PORTLAND, Ore.

Portland Police Chief Derrick Foxworth has ordered a recall of .45-caliber Glock Model 21 firearms, weapons carried by 230 Portland officers.

His order comes after two of the guns exploded in the hands of two separate officers during training this month. Neither of the officers was seriously injured.

"We don't want a reoccurrence of this happening again," Foxworth said. "It's the prudent thing to do."

The Portland Police Bureau at first thought the problem was caused by an ammunition malfunction. After the second explosion, the bureau's training division did further analysis and determined the explosions may have been caused by a defect in the weapon or a design problem.

Police will switch to 9 mm handguns. They are negotiating with company, whose North American headquarters is in Smyrna, Ga., to replace the .45-caliber weapons with 9 mm handguns at no cost.

Because the .45-caliber Glock is popular among law enforcement, the Portland police training officers sent a teletype to agencies nationwide. They heard back from several, including agencies in Florida and Texas, that had similar problems.

Other agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department, and Multnomah and Clackamas counties sheriff's departments, reported no problems.

Looks like Glock is still having QA/QC issues.

And people wonder why I won't buy a Glock?

Yeah, that is pretty bad. There haven't been any problems with the 9MM glocks KBing has there?

If I recall, Glock 9mm's don't have statistically higher incidents of kB's than any other well known/manufactured gun.

Sorry, there weren't any in the article.

I'm sure you can find them eventually on the web though

I wonder if I can find one of those "recalled" glocks cheap. I'll take my chances with one.

Interestingly, I believe there is actually more pressure generated in the chamber of a 9mm than a .45. The myth is supposed to be that .40's KB the most. First time I've heard about the .45.

From what I hear, most of the problems came from reloads and lead bullets. I've got on of the first glock 45 made and have never had any problems with it; no telling how many rounds has been through it.

From what i've heard... KBs are very rare if you don't shoot reloads.
I have been shooting for a while and only use new ammo. Has anybody here experienced a KB shooting new ammunition?

Yes, but I bet those police officers who had problems probably haven't cleaned, or maintained their weapons since the last time they qualified...

I am also willing to bet that the weapons went KB when they first drew their weapons and fired their carry ammo.

The lack of cleaning might not be the problem though as Glock brags about the reliability of their handguns in adverse conditions. They've tested them with sand and mud in them and they still work. Maybe they're using overpressure ammunition (for the .45 chamber)...
