I have built and use crossbows, for the last year or so- currently using a replica of a 1400's target/sporting crossbow- about a 50 pounder- for archery w/bows, there seem to be a lot of publications floating around to get one started- if you are wanting to get set up for archery, the first question is to considder where you can shoot- ie if you are in a city or country, where available range space is- found that out- my local range wont accept bows/ crossbows over 100lbs- goes through the targets.

shot, and taught archery (to my boy scouts) for a number
of years. to get started, look for a local archery club---they
will offer you a bow to shoot and help you decide what size
of bow to buy---you can waste a lot of money without some
sound advise.

My main advise would be to shoot instictive---not with sights.

If you can pick up a rock and hit something you can shoot
instinctive--there are no sights on a rock...

because you were born with two eyes, they adjust your brain
on distance....just stop and concentrate----then pull up and
lock it in on your chin....smooooooth release....
it takes a lot of practice, so don't try to start with to ,many pounds
of pull---50 or less is better.....you will find a lot of muscles you
have not used for a long time.

I did archery for five years. I was a memer of a club. We always shot indoors, becouse in the Netherlands we are not allowed to shoot outdoors or its got to be on your own property. I always shot at paper targets.
I still own a bow it's a Samic recurve bow with a drawweigt of 28lbs. It's made out of aluninium and has carbon fiber stabilisers an arrows.

Archery is a complex sport and not easy to learn. It's all about selfcontroll and concentration. You don't need a strong body it's all in the mind.

Monroe, I would let him try and pull around 30 lbs to start.
You could go with 45 lbs and let him grow into yours, if he
needs something bigger...just don't start to big....
----and pay special attention to what supafly said--it really is
self control and concentration....my instructor would stand
with his face 6 inches from mine and scream at me like a drill
instructor in the army......and when it finally hits you, it is like
stepping into another world for just a few seconds. You and
the bow and arrow become one.

Pops and I were really into archery when I was like 10-15. It was great. We put the fletching on our own arrows and all that good stuff. I got pretty good and one of my most prized posessions is the custom recurve he had made for me. I won a couple of youth tournaments, but then got into high school sports. I wish I could still find time to shoot.

I just went bow hunting this year for the first time. Came back empty. Well, I shot a squirrel but that doesn't count.
