Strider Knives: are they worth it for the price?

Anyone own a Strider knife (www.striderknives.com)? I was thinking about getting a strider folder, since I've heard many good things about the company, but the guy who owns the local knife shop I goto around the corner talked me out of it.

He claimed that Srider knives were just hyped because they give them to SWAT and the military. And the only reason they were expensive was because of the name.

So for now I'm holding off, but I wanted to see if anyone here had experience with any strider knife and liked it or not.

I currently do not own any Strider knives, but I had a Strider SnG for a while, and I loved it! Stider knives are worth every cent and more!

The only knife I can think of that would compete with the Strider folders would have to be the Lone Wolf Harsey Tactical folder.

I am also a knife dealer- heres the score as I see it- and some questions to think about.

1- did the knife dealer stock striders? a lot of dealers do not, as they do not list with a lot of distributers ( I have 8 distributers now, and none carry striders) also, they are very expensive, a lot of dealers do not stock them for that reason. was he trying to talk you into something else that he carried? I he has striders then its probably an honest opinion without much bias (that is not to say he is not being honest- I do not sell striders and I agree with him)

2- what do you plan to do with it- if your life is on the line and this knife is the deciding factor, then the price might well be low- note however that I just bought an AK-47 for less than most of their knives go for.

3- I have noted a trend in the industry lately where a great many companies hype the hell out of their knives- cold steel comes to mind- the thing to remember is that any knife is just a piece of steel- it does not convey training or skill- and any knife can be broken- also note that many companies have the same guarantee (or a very simmilar one) that strider does.

4- NO MATTER WHAT - handle the knife you are considdering buying- see if its ergonomics match what you like, check the fit and finish- lots of knives look great on paper, but everyones hands are different- I have had some blades come through my shop with great reviews that no one who looked at it could hold comfortably for any cutting task- another thing I see a lot is that every factory can have a bad knife come off the line- this happens a lot more with the cheapo ones, but no company is immune, and I have seen $400 folders with loose parts straight out of the box
So in short- be cautious, get all the info you can, and if you decide its for you then go for it (while I think they are overpriced and overhyped, I have never heard a complaint)

Thanks, FIRE, that helps alot.

The dealer near me does not carry striders (with the exception of the Buck Strider folder). So while his opinion is a little biased, I think he was being for the most part honest. He said what he thought and then left me alone to browse, without trying to push an alternative to strider on me. So I guess I should try to find a dealer who carries strider and test it out for myself.

Well, you are going to have quite a time finding a dealer with Striders. There are only a few out there. Where do you live?

Good point. I checked the website and there aren't any dealers near me. Guess I'm back to square one.

another option you might try is to go to a gun show and see if anyone there has one you could look at- I see a lot of the less readily available stuff there. Lots more of the gunshow type dealers have high end tactical folders as its not so much of a chunk of change for them to sit on untill it sells compared w/ their usual merchandise, and they tend to come more into contact w/ the type that wants that type of knife...

Good idea. There's a Gun and knife show coming up in about a month. I can wait.

They say that they are designed for military people to be good to use in the field and be affordable. I do not know many in the enlisted ranks that could put a nice car payment on a single knife. I could not justify for field use a knife that maybe gave 10% more improvement for 300% of the price. I will stick to my Spyderco.
