Tilted Weaponry Range Meet-Up Thread
Well, since this thread is apparently not going to die...
SF, your posts give me endless amusement. I would like to invite you out shooting if you ever happen to find yourself across the ocean and in North Carolina. I am sure four or five (at least) other TFP members would love to go as well. I am sure we can arrange for a Desert Eagle to make an appearance, along with just about any other firearm currently in use, as well as a whole host of watermelons, barricades, steel targets, etc. It will be a legitimate boatload of fun, in addition to putting to bed some of your more over-the-top arguments. As a matter of fact....Maybe we should get together anyways for a day of shenanigans, with out without SF. Dunedan might be willing to provide the range facilities, I will spring for some ammunition and a whole family of watermelons. Someone could build a box-o-truth style testing apparatus... You could make stages out of it: Shoot the six steel plates, reload, shoot through the barrier into the watermelons, then put a round through the test-box to stop time... My only two conditions would be that anyone attending: 1: respects other members privacy by not posting personal information learned online and 2: basic safety rules must be explained and adhered to with supervision. |
I would be down for that, plus I'd love to know where Dunedan's shop is when I actually have money to spend on shiny new guns.
Slims, if anything comes of this, let me know. |
I'm down! Shenanigans shall commence!
|
out of curiosity, what part of the country would these shenanigans be taking place? I enjoy burning powder on occasion!
|
North Carolina, most likely. It's where most of the guys who lurk on Weaponry live, oddly enough.
|
Time permitting, I definitely want to go.
Anyone from the MD/VA area want to carpool down? |
Don't look at me, bro. I have a prostate to empty.
EDIT: How about we do another shoot in June? ... Slims, I hate you. I wanna watch that vid so bad. |
I'm in, provided I don't end up on someone's facebook page. I will start scrounging for "scrape meatal" and see if I can't rig us up some poppers.

Turns out I've already got your manly bear spear picture printed out, laminated and taped above my bunk. For inspiration. It's between the portrait of Charles Grodin and a crying clown. |

Tilted Weaponry Range Meet-Up Thread
In order to best organize discussion about potential TFP range meet-ups, post your info here.
... I'll start: I'm probably not going to be available in January 2011 (it's cold, I'm trying to get laid... pick your excuse), but should be around in June 2011 for some hot-hot blastin' action. I prefer 3/4 size steel plates over paper targets and I'm willing (read: giddy) to chip in on advance bulk ammo buys. |
Where? VA? MD? DC?
|
I'd spearhead this, but one of the first things we'd need is a facility, and I am not familiar with any ranges that would permit steel, multiple shooters, and the like.
If anyone could suggest a facility that we can book/take over, that would be great (and would simultaneously designate the location of the meet). |
Um if you're all willing to come to arizona Ben Avery shooting range is huge. I can't remember for sure, but they have everything (police and swat train there). There's also places in the desert your still allowed to shoot out here. I have several friends (ex-military, they even have a machine gun somehow! or used to, they said something about firing off the last of the rounds) that know those places. I'm broke though, so I'd mostly watch and try and learn.
Ben Avery Arizona Shooting Range Facility Edit: oh, and its a very gun oriented state, anyone can CC, so you wouldn't have much if anything to worry about. The cops are pretty cool when it comes to firearms. I know its a bitch when my cousin has to go through states with his assault rifle. |

To keep the events organized, the date/time/location/activity will be posted for each individual event. |
This now looks like a mess, but I've moved the relevant stuff from another thread into this one.
|
The Dunedan has a family range in the mountains of NC that would probably be appropriate for our use. I think the standard range fee is $5 and he is the final authority on what is/is not allowed. It is a relatively simple setup, basically it's a standard flat range but should be more than adequate if we get creative.
If there are other facilities you guys would prefer then I am ok with that as well. I will be happy to attend any weekend where I am actually here...I should be free a couple weekends in January and/or February. After that I won't be available for a while. By all means though don't plan for me. Pick the date/location that fits the most people and hopefully I can make it. |
Let's do this. Best time for deals/purchasing would be in late January, February or early March, when all the good deals start rolling in from January trade-show orders.
As for creative...oh yeah. We can get creative. Creativity is -fun-. I second the notion of a Box O' Truth-style setup: I wanna settle it with Plan9 about the Judge once and for all. I also love the idea of a timed testing setup such as Slims mentioned, but I haven't got the foggiest idea how one goes about constructing such a thing. And of course, you've got to love splattering watermelons, although they might be abit hard to find at that time of the year. I like this idea. |
Man, anyone got a shot timer? It would be awesome to do some close range shooting on IDPA style targets with an Eotech and Aimpoint and compare the difference.
Just throwing this out there....any objections to January 22-23rd or January 29-30th? |

I'm in SoCal, but all my guns are in Ohio. I'd obviously pay for ammo if someone can bring weapons.

I have kind of been to Carolina once (a layover overnight at Raleigh airport when I was flying to CT)
By all means if I am ever there again I will let you know, and be happy to show you buys how to handle a metal. I have played paintball before, and while it isnt the same its the same principle, so I am pretty confident that I will be a good shot. |
Strange Famous, you always put a smile on my face...

So what's the best date for everyone?
|
Gunfighter League
...For anyone who happens to want to shoot on short notice. I will probably be heading to their match this saturday. This is a civilian-run range that takes it's name from the Fort Bragg Range 37. I don't know what to expect as I have not yet been there, but it should be a pretty decent combat-oriented match. They seem to be a bit heavy on hype. Don't confuse this with the matches hosted by the actual range 37... |

Looks like a really rad course of fire setup even if the rhetoric on the front page makes me want to show up in a man dress and profess my hatred of pork products. As usual, I won't be able to attend because I'll be at work where nobody ever shoots guns. Maybe in June? Let's look at June, guys.
|
I'm in, if only to tell everyone how gay the whole "infidel" thing is (like 4 guys blowing 12 guys gay).
|
Yeah, the infidel thing was chuckle-worthy the first time. It's been downhill ever since. I'd be interested in attending, although I'd imagine I would be the least skilled of the lot.
|
Not when I show up cimarron, i'm still a level 1 gunslinger.
Now that I have money coming in, I'm down for this. I'd like to have a rifle to shoot by the time this rolls around. |
Eden, where the hell have you been? You need to post more often, Mr. Too Successful for TFP. And go find Analog.
... ALSO: Man, fuck my life. I'm so jealous. Everybody is going to this super gnarly (albeit incredibly racist) range thing and I'm going to be off in New Jersey driving in really big circles and praying for a football to land on my head. Thanks a lot guys. I really hope you post pictures of Walt burying his M4 into a stripper up to the front sight post and when Eden discovers how to open beer bottles with his otherwise unused bayonet lug. I need to go back to being a college student. They get a lot more time to do training. |

I wouldn't worry about anyone's skill level at a place like this. From what I understand the match is just straight gaming in 5.11 tactical pants.

I hear he doesn't even get to use his gun. Slacker. ***** Just so no one is acually looking for me, I was "In" for failplanster's idea of a June meetup. Not the shootout that Slims was talking about. Still to early in the paychecks to worry about shooting guns. ***** I swear, I've seen that sign before... |

SUPER IMPORTANT: Fuck 5.11 pants. Garbage. They're way too expensive for what they are: earth tone jeans with dinky cargo pockets. ... Quote:

(The smell is horrific.) |
Just a quick update: The match was surprisingly cool and very well run. The courses of fire seemed fairly well thought out and stressed "real-world" skills. The weather was shitty.
Slims and I also got to watch a guy shoot himself in the boot while trying to holster his pistol, so that was fun, too. The round entered about ankle high and came out on the bottom/side of his heel without touching him. To give you an idea of the crowd: as soon as everyone saw the guy shoot himself, they immediately started talking shit and demanding the shooter be given a procedural penalty. Good times. |

To add to the shenanigans a nearby SF medic (who was competing in full kit including armor and aid bag) wouldn't stop grumbling about not getting a day off while he was checking the guy out. The 'shooter' was politely and discretely disqualified, but encouraged to stay and watch in the hopes that he would learn something. The match was a mix of military and civilians with a wide range of skill-levels. The RO's/'Instructors' were professional and seemed very competent. I am now thinking of enrolling my wife in some of their shooting courses while I am away. The 'infidel' theme is still a bit silly, but the quality of the course of fire made up for it. |

You do realize your TAD pants cost more than my entire work outfit for a week, right? I just can't stand head-to-toe 5.11 goons. ... Quote:

JULY 2011
Hey guys, I should be available to attend whatever hot-hot training event is within Reasonable Bragg Distance (TM) during the month of July 2011. I live on the mid east coast so anything from Pennsylvania to South Carolina is game. I'm looking at a carbine/pistol class but open to others (AK, etc.). I'd like to do a multiple-day class or a back-to-back classes as to make good use of travel time, gas and hotel costs. Carpooling will happen. Thoughts? Plans? Ideas? I was thinking maybe Viking Tactics' "Street Fighter" or a similar course would be cool. Ideas? Suggestions? Who can attend? |
I am deployed again. Sorry.
|
I just got an idea.
A couple of us agree to a certain date range. I contact a training firm, see if they're interested in training a class. Then, I'll look in to a facility (or facility first, as that may be a better pre-req). Then we all get together and get some productive shooting done. Anyone interested? Something like a precision rifle class? 2-3 day range? Or VTAC Streetfighter? (They have none scheduled in the future--from what it looks like there needs to be some legwork done to set up the class). It's a fight in urban enviroment/from vehicle type of class. ---------- Post added at 01:08 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:58 AM ---------- *ETA*: I'm talking late 2011, 2012 date range |
I would love to. However, considering that any one of these courses costs the equivalent of about 2 month's salary, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to participate. Add in ammo, transport, and lodging and I'm double fucked. I can hook y'all up with a range, but 'fraid anything formal is out of the question for me.
|
Okay, scratch that. :)
Would love to meet up on a weekend and run some drills, though. Or just shoot with the TFP gunners. |
Dunedan, the Viking Tactics course cost $600. You're telling me that you make $300 a month?
... I'm not home very often anymore and try to max out on training while I'm in the land of beer and blowjobs. My job also cripples my social life so I figured I'd try to get some type of lame TFP gun guy get-together. As KirStang suggested, I'd be glad to set up some type of meet-up that involves guns one day, booze another. |
Really? I thought I remembered the last couple of courses y'all took running into the $2000 range. Could be I'm remembering prices I ran across elsewhere; Mea Culpa in any case. Unfortunately it's still un-doable, but thanks for the info.
|
I poked around the VTAC site some more, it'll cost something like $3,042 a day for up to 15 members. (Hence the $200/day sort of figure that's the industry standard).
It's good training. But then again, I'm not sure everyone can justify spending so much $$ on a skillset that they may never use. |
I'd be interested in a cheap single-day course or renting out Dunedan's range.

JULY 2011
Again, I should be available to attend whatever hot-hot training event or range meet-up that is within Reasonable Fort Bragg Distance (TM) during the month of July 2011. I live on the mid east coast so anything from Pennsylvania to South Carolina is game. I'm looking at a couple carbine/pistol classes but I'm open to others (AK, shotgun, etc.). Thoughts? Plans? Ideas? There is an entry level "room clearing" class (w/ tactifatties) near the end of July that would be a relatively brainless gun-oriented get-together. Anybody game? I have a fully loaded guest room and a big couch and lotsa alcohol. *usual TFP crickets* |
holy shit niner where've you been?
|
Better question: Who gives a fuck?
... Please don't soil my Range Meet-Up thread with silly questions. I don't want it to turn into another TFP XY circle jerk. |
Classes? No. Meet up with beer? Yes.
I can't afford to take the cool kids classes with the tactifatty cheerleaders. I'd love to, but the equipment for that would be way beyond my $12 an hour paycheck. Informal shooting at a range? Yes, but don't hold back because of me. Let me know where you guys are going to be and I'll come afterwards with munchies and beer. Personally, I'd love to go to the The_Dunedan's shop and maybe shoot at his range. That's a long way for the 9ner to drive just to do what he can do down the street. |
I'm in for whatever, though I don't think my schedule will allow for a multi-day course. If cost is an issue, we can always look in to an IDPA or 3-gun match. You all will, of course, be competing for second place.
|
Walt,
I'd like to do IDPA / 3-Gun. I'll hit you up in a week or so when I'm back in town. And you should know: I don't compete for second. I consistently secure 19th. I make that Hinson guy look like Jerry Miculek. I'm hot garbage behind the trigger. |

Too bad I can't go with you guys and do some shenanigans. Bar prep is killing me.

. |
Eh, I've only got until the 20-somethingth of July. I'm going to be busting a cap in tactifatties on the 23rd in your old state.
Then my ass is back on a plane to The Place Where No One Cares (TM). Let me know what your shed-yoo-ull looks like. If not, perhaps next year. /failed bromance |
