What I saw through my scope this past weekend.......
...........I guess I can put it here, since the description includes the things we use our guns for.
A solid 11-pointer. He had crab claw like tines at the end of each side, and one had been recently broken off or he would've been a 12. He also has two small nubs at the base of his rack. He's about a 160" class deer, and field dressed over 220lbs. To top it off, it was my first time ever deer hunting, and I was only in my stand an hour. Here is a shot of our take for Opening Day. Between 7 of us, we got 4 bucks. Two 8 pointers, my 11, and a button buck that was mistaken for a doe. Not bad, eh?

Dude, good shooting. You have no idea how nice it is to see the rounds going where they're supposed to after seeing the incompetent butchery of some of my neighbors. Well done. I wish we had some of those big boys around here, but I like a nice fat doe personally. Lotsa nice, tender meat...buck gets too big, all he's good for is backstraps and jerkey.
Not that I mind 30lbs of jerkey, you understand! |

I broke his shoulder and punctured a lung, but believe it or not, he still ran over half a mile, through 3-4 wooded ravines, and was a major pain to track and find.

When I shot him, it knocked him completely down and flipped him over. After 2-3 seconds he got up and ran. He covered better than half a mile before he dug himself into a thicket and died.

My SO got his first deer of hunting season on Friday, with a bow. She was a FAT, 18 month-old doe. His shot was absolutely perfect - straight through both cranial lung fields, she only made it about 50 yards before she died. Broke the arrow into three pieces, one of which stayed inside, and didn't even have enough time left to aspirate any blood. 37 lbs of nice, tender meat has been processed and frozen out of that one!
He's out hunting a 10-point buck at the moment (shotgun week..), but if he doesn't have luck today he'll be going after the 9-pointer on his parents' property with a bow, since he'll have until February to have some luck. I helped field dress and butcher, and I get the bones to play with making tools and whatnot, so I'm happy. Nice shot, Borla.

I think tomorrow I'm going to start the jerky making process with some of it.

Oh, the jerky out of this doe is amazing. A-may-zing. So tasty.
I'd recommend finding a jerky recipe that works with ground venison. It's much easier to just make some lean ground to use for jerky than it is to cut strips out of some of the more difficult-to-trim meat. It's also easier to mix spices in with ground.

True, but the cut stuff stays so nice and moist...I'm enjoying my fat little doe right now. Took her on opening day of rifle season, with my sporterised Steyr M-95 straight-pull, shooting a pet handload that did quite nicely. 206gr round-nose cast-lead bullet over 15.5gr of Hercules 2400 for around a grand, gives about 500fpe. At 50-75yrds, like plenty of the shots you get in these mountains, it does beautifully. This tasty little critter ran about sixty yards and piled up dead with no heart. We marinade in soy sauce, garlic, and red pepper, then dehydrate with more crushed red pepper sprinkled on.* GAWD this stuff is good!
*Some days, being from Lousiana has its advantages. |

I got the mount back this evening.
Not too shabby, eh? And if you want something to put it in perspective against, how about these two shots? Same rack, but with a 92lb Bullmastiff puppy checking it out.
