Time to move, too many firearms though.
Time to move to another state/job.
Problem: too much ammo/guns. TMO wont take ammo and I can only take what I can tow in my SUV. I dont wanna burn out the tranny, its rated to tow 6400 but I figure if I rent a 1000lb U-haul trailer and load 2000 lb of guns/ammo I should be ok. 3000 sounds like a good weight. (military pays for moves but uses a civilian company, so guys come to the house, pack your stuff and move it just like any other company) So I offloaded 14 cases of 5.45 to a local buddy. That got rid of a few pounds. And TMO said they'd move rifles. I opted for them to take ones I could lose and get a market rate for if reimbursed. An SBR or Krink would never be fully reimbursed but my Bolt Actions would. So I am sending mosins/mausers with the movers. Cosmo'd them up and removed the bolts. They say they will log them and store them in a vault, so we will see in a few months if they're still around. Took photos of every gun/close ups of serial#s. That should save some weight. But its still paranoia with them taking em. Keeping all the bolts with me. Any other recommendations for towing, moving, n guns? Probably going to OHIO, and a small chance of going to CA. ![]() |

I ended up moving most of my expensive longarms and pistols with me. The less expensive rifles (the AK, the FAL) went with my movers. Good call on pulling the bolts.
![]() I also didn't tell the movers why some small boxes were so damn heavy. Stupid on my part though, as that may have resulted in legal liability.

stang, everything arrive ok? did they have you inspect them and sign for them or what?
I have been meaning to offload a lot of my stuff but the move came faster than expected. The problem is its 1400 miles, I aint driving that twice! We considered ME driving a uhaul truck with small car in tow, and wife driving SUV with 1 baby and 1 toddler. Well the wife was not happy with the idea of two screaming kids and her attending to them while driving, and I agreed. So we are shipping the small car, and using the SUV to tow a trailer of stuff. Never towed before so I am a bit worried. Dang hobby! At least I don't have jet skis or a boat or bigger stuff. |

![]() Re: Long Arms. Yes they arrived safely--I put eyes on and did a quick inventory of sensitive items before the movers left. ---------- Post added at 03:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:17 PM ---------- ETA: 14 cases of 5.45...that's like...15,000 rds. Wtf dude? That's a lot of ammo.

You would think so, but there was one guy on Something Awful's gun forum who was apparently pretty well off; after finding that nothing shot as well in his AR as a certain production run of surplus West German 5.56, he contacted the importer, got a list of every store in the US that had gotten any, and bought all of it - over 150,000 rounds.

Well, isn't he retarded.
... I have a modest Liberty safe the size of a tall refrigerator that will be moved empty, especially considering that I have to hire piano movers to get it out the door. My plan is to move sensitive items (computers, sex toys, television, liquor cabinet, firearms, cat, dog, motorcycle, girlfriend, etc.) on my own well ahead of the the "main haul" so that when I do finally move into my next house that everything important is already under wraps when questionable men come to move less important things such as my legendary couch and all that pastel shit my girlfriend keeps in the bedrooms/bathrooms. Another idea would be dropping the crates in a buddy's garage until you can come back and get them yourself. I always make multiple trips. Doing everything in one shot is usually a crash-bang disaster. Last edited by Plan9; 07-17-2011 at 02:33 PM.. |

I do group buys on ammo in my area. I bought a pallet of 5.45 and some guys dropped out the day it arrived. "oh man, I gotta pay my water bill or they turn it off"
(uhh dude, if you are THAT far behind on basics, I dont think shooting should be your hobby) I also do dealer/mil cost on guns here so they come pretty cheap. That and with my hobby I invest in some guns and then flip them to buy more. Namely when a democrat runs for office. Yeah, 15 cases was 30K+. The upside is, when I get where I am going, the importer is only an hour away, so MORE ammo ![]() Lol@9,sensitive items being THE CAT. we are trying to find a home for our two, we will be on base housing and no cats allowed ![]() I am wanting a nice fireproof safe when we get wherever we are going, with all the PCS moves I have been using light safes just to get by. And yeah.........the moving company guys are always the shadiest types I've ever seen. I feel nervous about them packing my most important things. Mulitiple trips are out of the question with family responsibilities, though it was on my list a ways back. Now its down to security for my Uhaul trailer on the journey. Trying to stay on a base, or stay at an out of the way place (not a motel) like a bed and breakfast on a farm or someplace that doesnt advertise "u-haul, steal me" while I am asleep. My buddy also recommended using our video baby monitor to watch the car while its parked too. |

lol that'd be awesome. Road Warrior style caravan. "you can put turrets on a U-haul?"
One of my buds did it right. Packed all his crap in boxes and all we had to do was literally, move it onto a dolly and truck. None of that: oh yeah, I did ZERO prep the day before and have no idea how valuable your time is, care to help me pack my glassware? We might finish loading by midnight bro. |

If you move to Ohio there's a gun and knife show nearly every weekend. The advertisements drive me bonkers: "Gun and knife show... Bring a friend!" worst jingle ever. There's also an abnormal number of gun shops, only place I've seen more was Montana.

Hah!
I was the same way when I saw my dad's Marlin .35 Remington Lever Action. Nowadays, I have cooler toys to play with. Sigh. Guns. Such a pain in the ass ![]()
