New gun cleaning, long term storage goop.
I have had hand guns and a bolt action rifle, but I just got my first AK-47. It still has the long term storage oil/goop. I cant remember what this is called. How should I clear it off before I put the light coat of oil on it?
BTW, hello everyone. Thanks for having this forum. Jonathan |
Cosmoline? WD-40, heat will help get it out too. Will post more later.

Hair dryer works for heat but doesn't go the long hall very well, using a high wattage light bulb in a trash can or other reflector goes a long way to heat it up.

Yeah, just get the sucker hot. Keep it hot for a long time. Cosmoline soaks into wood, so if you don't leach it all out, it'll come out of th wood and get on your hands/clothes/dog/carpet/preacher once th gun heats up.

It depends, if your not married/living w/ your girlfriend or parents, dismantle it and put it in the dishwasher with no detergent (yes I'm serious). Make sure you properly dry and lubricate it when you reassemble it. If you have a wife/live in girlfriend, or live with your parents and you use their dishwasher to do this, they may shoot you with the gun.
Btw, I'm assuming that you bought this as shooter, and that it's not an actual Krinkov. |
Thanks guys
I used a cloth adn got everything off the metal. I didnt even think about the damn wood. :) My diushwasher is my live in girlfriend !!! oh she will shot me for that.
I'll take my snake light and put that on it and then rub that sucker down. Thanks again, Jonathan |
A friend of mine found out his girlfriend had an SKS in the wrapping. Pulled it out and found it stunningly gunked up with cosmoline. Did some research to see if there was a better way to remove than the old stand-by of cloth and WD-40, we found that steam-cleaning works. So said friend hit the store and picked up one of those little table-top steam-cleaners with a wand. It took the goop off rather easily, and even got the crap out of the wood. Took very little time and made surprisingly little mess.
All we had to do was make certain to dry it well after (though steam doesn't leave much water collecting, less than you'd think), and lubricate it for protection. You knew that, of course. |
