Ugliest Gun competition ....

Step right up and let's see who can find the ugliest gun.

I know one person's eyesore is another person's eye candy ... but let's see what we can do.

I'll start:

Presenting the EAA Thor single shot pistol:

http://airbornecombatengineer.typepa...thorraptor.jpg

A 1911 frame topped off with a giant barrel.
Is that a small picatinny rail under the barrel? ... it can't possibly be an aesthetic feature, can it? If you're going to have a monster barrel why don't they just go the full length with that rail?
And check out that stamped logo! What angry grade school delinquent designed that?

I don't doubt it's an excellent gun - it's just damned ugly.
Go ahead and tell me if you think I'm wrong, that's OK, too.

it's your turn.
MUST INCLUDE PICS

I know people are going to disagree but I always thought that the Browning autoloader shotguns were fugly with that hump back look.

Presenting the Mateba revolver.

http://images.gunsamerica.com/upload/976773238-1.jpg

A recoil-cycling revolver. The idea is that it's supposed to have the reliability of a revolver with the cycling ability of a semi-auto. It's supposed to be pretty accurate.

The problem is that it's bigger and heavier than both the revolver and the autoloader ... on top of that it still has the capacity of a revolver. Not exactly a self-defense weapon.

Above is pictured a Mateba with an integral muzzle brake.

Then there's the French FAMAS ...

http://world.guns.ru/assault/famas_f1.jpg

-------------------

Let's not forget the Gyrojet and Gyrojet Carbine ...

This pistol used rocket propelled rounds (imagine the cost of ammo) ... unfortunately it also had the accuracy of a hocked loogie.

It was even featured in the Bond film "You Only Live Twice." (correct me if I have the wrong film).

The pistol I don't mind so much ... but the carbine is butt-ugly.

I'm told the Lee Enfield (bullpup) kicks a lot because it's so back-heavy.

I guess the P90 doesn't look as butt-ugly as some items look to me - probably because it looks like a cool stapler design or something.

I have an uglier bullpup here. The French FAMAS.
http://www.iamanangelchaser.com/files/gunge/famas.jpg

The_Dunedan 12-23-2006 11:42 PM

I like bullpups. I used to hate the things, but my mom collects 'em, and I was gradually won over. I like how they balance, personally; they're VERY fast getting on-target, and the recoil is so straight back (thanks to the breech being between, rather than in front of, the support structure of the firing hand and strong-side shoulder) that you can keep a 4x scope on target all the way through the recoil impulse. A bullpup .308 would be interesting; the Israelis have supposedly fielded one based on the M-14 platform, though personally I'd rather see an FAL conversion.

longbough 12-24-2006 03:50 PM

I have nothing against the bullpup design. It has many advantages like the balance offering quick mounting and a longer barrel in a compact rifle.
On the negative side I don't like having the ejection port so close to my face and some models are awkward if you want to shoot leftie.
Everything has its plusses and minuses.

'course if someone gave me a Steyer AUG or FN-P90 my opinions may change. So I'll stand by my sour grapes. So, lemme get this straight ... your MOM collects bullpups? You have one cool mom there.

But this thread is about ugliness ... and there are some bizarre bullpups out there.

The_Dunedan 12-25-2006 01:33 AM

Now, I never said bullpups were pretty, mind you. That Type-8something AK bullpup is simply hideous, though I can't find a picture at the moment.

[threadjack] Yeah, and get this, she married my gun dealer. I introduced 'em, she bought her AUG two days later, and they got married eighteen months ago. She got a PS-90 for Christmas, the lucky little...ahem! [/threadjack]

I second the Chauchat, btw...form certainly seems to have followed function there.

ziadel 12-26-2006 06:53 PM

I dig on the P90, office equipment or not. I wouldn't mind keeping one in my desk drawer!

FN's 5.56mm bullpup, however, is HIDEOUS. Not only is it uglier than sin on crackers, it's blocky, uncomfortable to carry or fire...it basically sucks. Not a single military has picked it up that I'm aware of, and it's barely been a blip on law-enforcement screens. It's a toad.

only reason I am keeping my eyes on it is because its actually ambidextrous...

and Longbough, its not flaccid, just a little bent to get the hard to reach areas I suppose.

I think I remember my buddy telling me about these things, he said another big problem qwas since the projectile had to get up to speed, you could easily defeat the weapon by sticking your finger in the barrel

The_Dunedan 12-31-2006 09:24 AM

Dude, stay as far away from the FS2000 as you can manage. I cannot emphasize enough how un-ergonomic that thing is. If you're after an ambidextrous bullpup, try and track down an AUG or USR. Steyr makes a damned fine gun, and they're -extremely- accurate, to boot. I've seen 3" groups at 500 yards from a USR wearing a 4x Hendsholt. You can get left-handed bolts and such, though I don't know how easy they are to find.

Omigod, that Thor Raptor is a total joke.

I guess it's all a matter of taste. The FAMAS looks less like a weapon than a caulking gun.
Nothing against bullpups - I own a FN FS2000 - and I happen to like it.

I also happen to like the CZ P-01 (I own an SP-01) and the SCAR.

Plan9 07-22-2007 06:30 PM

What's the forward-ejecting super-plastic FS2000 like, anyways?

Worth the $2k? Is it really as user-friendly as they say?

longbough 07-22-2007 06:49 PM

I just purchased it but haven't shot it yet. My sling just arrived.

From handling it:
Pros:
-It's a bullpup with a 17" barrel that doesn't extend as far out as my AR. In theory the balance should allow for a pretty rapid mounting - we'll see.
-I slapped on an EoTech 553 and it looks like it was made for the weapon - looking more and more like the "HALO" rifle. OK. I just think it looks pretty cool.
-Accepts standard high cap-type AR mags - which saves me money right there since I've got a shitload of them already.
-forward-ejecting - kinda neat to not have brass flying out all over the place
-charging handle position - just like my FAL. Easy to manipulate without losing the firing grip.
-Lightweight balanced - would be easier to shoot with one hand than, say, my AR

Cons so far:
-Charging handle doesn't lock back with the last round. Why? I donno. I guess I have to learn how to count to 30.
-Magazines don't drop-free. Would make emergency reloads a little slower than with an AR. I wonder if I can fix this.
-Big ol magazine eject button behind the grip has a mushy action. I'll have to learn to use it effectively/quickly.
-Trigger could be better - but, then again, it could be worse.

All in all I think it's worth it. It feels very compact and handy - that's what I'm paying for. A stock AR is less but my own AR already has more than $2500 invested in it over the base weapon (not including optics).

Yeah, I mentioned the Nambu.

That thing is SO ugly and unsafe and has zero stopping power.

Hell, I'd take a Ruger Mk II over that ANY day. 100% improvement.

Raven .25s probably have more stopping power. I know they're more reliable.

LOL

Willravel 07-26-2007 06:01 PM

I'm sure most people around here are familiar with my distain for guns, but it may surprise you that I think they're cool as hell to look at.

With an exception:
The Derringer M-1 . Ugh. I realize they're great for concealment, but they look way too much like something you get out of a Cracker Jack box to be cool. I remember an episode of Family Guy where peter writes his number on a gun, messes up, crinkles it up like a piece of paper and throws it away. All I could think was Darringer.

Plan9 07-26-2007 06:40 PM

Suave,

Ugly, sure... but the Kriss Super V is an engineering masterpiece! Omigod, I wish we'd had that thing during WWII. Hahaha, just imagine that instead of the Thompson! WOOOO! I can't wait to see that with some good 30 round mags spitting .45 ashtrays like no tomorrow. Oh, hot-hot TEH UBERSEX action!

...

WillRavel,

It is okay to dislike guns, but its ignorance not to know how they work... which is why I loathe soccer mom types who refuse to touch them. They are just as viable as a modern tool as a screwdriver or a steering wheel. You should know how they work so you can disable them through unloading them should you find the need to do so.

...

Hey-hey. I have an American Derringer in .357 Magnum. Yikes is right.

When you pull the trigger on that thing it sounds like a hand grenade going off. If it doesn't hit 'em... it sure-as-shootin' scared the crap out of them.

My grandpa taught me when I was younger.
For anyone out there who doesn't know (making sure to keep the gun pointed in a safe direction the whole time, even if you think you know the gun isn't loaded, and keeping your damned finger off the trigger):
1) Make sure the gun isn't cocked
2) Remove the magazine (the part that holds the bullets)
3) Pull the slide (top part) back slowly and carefully and check to see if there are any cartridges (the casing of the bullet) in the chamber.
4) Remove all ammunition from the immediate surrounding area.

I'm not saying they're not useful or powerful, just that I think they're kinda ugly. Kinda like Steve Buscemi. He's got the talent, the draw, the power, but he's not much to look at.

Plan9 07-26-2007 07:14 PM

WillRavel,

You know I'd never assume or insist that you're ignorant, bro.

All the IQ points are belong to you.

I was refer to them. (points finger to globe)

...

Hahah, I'll be honest... I had the M1, too!

It is surprisingly durable piece of solid steel. An immensely strong design for a tiny-tiny gun that is merciless to both the target and the person firing it.

In a gun fight? I'd rather have a Ruger .22 than any caliber derringer.

Firearms are more than just function over form.

Like women.

Take the Colt Double Eagle, for example.

UGLY gun. Killed the sales. Period.

Metal Gear Solid is probably the best combat themed video game ever.
