Well, my last Air Rifle, a Crosman 2100 just broke, and I'm looking for something to replace it for shooting in the backyard etc. Basically something a good velocity (750+ fps?), as well as something easy to pump. The biggest gripe I had about the 2100 was for max velocity you had to pump it almost 10 times and that was a pain.

I've heard a little about break-barrel style air rifles, how do these work specifically? From what I gather they are single shot pellet guns? One thing I never liked about the pellets was that most were lead, leaving the powdery residue all over your hands. For those who have this type of rifle, is it a pain carrying around and loading the ammo?

Break barrel rifles attach the piston to an arm on the bototm of the barrel, and bending the barrel to around a 115 degree angle pressurizes the chamber and cocks the gun. You put the pellet (doesn't work with BBs) into the breech of the barrel, then click the barrel back into place and fire.

I have an older Gamo delta, and the only factor that concerns me about their guns is that replacement parts are impossible to find and factory service requires shipping to Spain. Break barrels are a lot more convenient than a pumper, and you can fire between 5 and 10 shots in the time it takes to load and pump another gun.

Beeman makes brass coated pellets that cost about twice as much (I think it was $8 for 500) and don't leave any residue on your hands. They're hollow point, but my brother and I tested with a variety of fruits and found that they do not mushroom on impact under any circumstances.

Thanks for the info! Im glad there are relatively inexpensive pellets that dont leave that damn residue on your hands! Guess that's what I get from using cheapo bullets made probably in 1970 handed down from my grandfather. :P

If anyone could recomend one with decent accuracy that'd be great!

About 20 years ago I had a Feinwerbau M-124 - it's a spring-piston gun that gets 800+ fps

I bought a winchester model 1000X a while back, the sights that came on it sucked. They were too easily adjustable. I put a scope on it and can now touch pellets at 25 yards. The other huge problem with accuracy is the trigger, I cant get it to pull easily so I need a solid rest any time I shoot, offhand wont work at all. (And I am confident I can shoot well.) The power is good, I think in the 900 range. Just my opinion, find another rifle but go with the break barrel for ease and power

Well I bought a Gamo 1000, love the gun, but damn is it loud as hell! Hard to shoot in the backyard with this thing!
