Linksys router firmware updates

I'm looking to get a little more out of my new Linksys WRK54G wireless router. I know about the antenna stuff, and getting bigger one, but that costs money. I've heard of firmwares that allow tinkering around with power ouput. Anyone know of a place to get these? I'm on a laptop, otherwise, an antenna off of the machine would be alright, too. Thanks, y'all.

That's the latest firmware I could find for your router. I don't know about 3rd party firmware, but that seems to be what Linksys is offering.

Be aware that you won't see huge gains from firmware tinkering. You'll be able to optimize everything and get a small increase in performance, but you don't get big benefits unless you modify the hardware. It's the nature of these things.

That's the Linksys forum over at dlsreports. They have a policy against linking to firmware so you won't find that there, but there may be some tips you can use. There certainly seemed to be a lot of threads regarding the WRK54G at a glance.

Good luck.

For my router, I use the firmware from Sveasoft.

As the others said, you won't get much by tuning. With a stock antenna, range is mostly about channel selection and antenna placement.

That said, antennae are cheap if you make one yourself. A directional can be as low as $2 in parts plus cable, omni about the same with more work. You might get enough gain with just an aluminum foil collector for the existing antenna.

Google "antenna homemade" for a more than you wanted to know.
