Google IM

Quote:

They say talk is cheap. Google thinks it should be free. Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free–anytime, anywhere in the world. Google Talk offers you:

* Choice: Get in touch how and when you want to–over email, IM or a call

* Quality: Talk through your computer but hear your friends as if they were in the same room

* Convenience: Your Gmail contacts are pre-loaded into Google Talk so inviting or talking to your friends is just a click away

Google Talk is in beta and requires a Gmail username and password.
You may find it at http://www.google.com/talk/

This will not officially be released to the public until August 23rd.

Someone hit me up at mikesty@gmail.com

silent_jay 08-23-2005 08:37 PM

I guess I should consider a gmail account sometimes, they are coming out with some cool things. Is gmail still invite only?

bendsley 08-23-2005 08:44 PM

Yes, Gmail is still invite only. They give everyone who has an acct. at least 50 invites or so. There is a thread on here about Gmail invitations and plenty of places on the internet to get a Gmail acct.

MikeSty 08-23-2005 09:00 PM

Invites here! Now talk to me!!!

Wingless 08-23-2005 09:20 PM

I'm still waiting on Google Breakfast, the free pancake and eggs service provided by Google.

Seriously though, this is pretty cool, albeit slightly scary that Google is branching out into everything...

MexicanOnABike 08-23-2005 10:22 PM

i'll take an invite... plz. pm me plz! or pt 357 @ hot mail . com :)

Lwang9276 08-23-2005 11:04 PM

if anyones got an invite.. my email is lwang9276ahs@yahoo.com

MahlerIsGod 08-24-2005 12:49 AM

Tried it. It kept freezing up. Its gone. Hopefully they will fix things in this beta version.

Moskie 08-24-2005 03:04 AM

Anyone know why I wouldn't be able to see the "Talk" buttons? I don't see them where the screen shots they've got posted show them to be...

Seems like a pretty slick piece of software, though. But I'm not sure how much I need another IM network to choose from... In the end, I'll probably just throw this account into Trillian.

Johnny Pyro 08-24-2005 03:10 AM

Oh please invite me!!!! Darthpyro66@yahoo.com

steveincolumbus 08-24-2005 03:35 AM

If you want to be completely geeky, you can get around that pesky firewall, for ANY use, be it messaging of any sort or mail, etc. All it takes is a Linux box at home with SSH running on a port that your firewall lets thru. If you want the rest of the specifics, let me know :).

ShaniFaye 08-24-2005 04:40 AM

lol well if I had the funds or the knowledge of linux that would probably be a wonderful idea!!! but I dont hehehe

Linux is 100% free and will work with pretty much any machine.. If you have any old computer that turns on and has atleast a cdrom or floppy (no hard drive), you have the hardware needed. The knowledge is pretty simple too.. a distrubution called Knoppix (requires a cdrom) is self contained.. pop it in, turn it on, and boom, you have Linux running.

Anyhoo, just an idea :) Ive gotten around a few firewalls that were irritating me with this method.

Charlatan 08-24-2005 05:00 AM

Looks very cool...

or you could just leave your regular desktop at home on and connect to it via VNC (virtual network computing) you won't need to learn Linux and you can use it on any web browser client computer that allows Java.

Krycheck 08-24-2005 08:36 AM

I have 50 invites and someone IM me so I can see it work! krycheck@gmail.com

zxello 08-24-2005 09:53 AM

PM me if you need a GMail account, I have like 50 invites or somethin.

Pragma 08-24-2005 10:49 AM

It does look nice, but doesn't really have that many features.. hopefully the next release will include a lot more.

Charlatan 08-24-2005 10:55 AM

Been using it a bit today and it *feels* like Google. I like it for that alone. I am sure the features will only get better.

ShaniFaye 08-24-2005 11:02 AM

damn it I wish I could use it!!

I will try it when I get home

wdevauld 08-24-2005 11:33 AM

In today's news Google has just released Skynet V1.0 Beta.

About talk.google.com, I like the simple client, and the fact that it uses the Jabber protocol. What I don't like is that google shut down server2server communication which pretty much takes away all the advantage of using Jabber.

Why did you do it Google, Why?

connyosis 08-24-2005 12:02 PM

Been trying to connect all day, but keep getting an error about not being able to login. Followed the instructions very carefully but still no go. Oh well, maybe tomorrow...

Krycheck 08-24-2005 03:06 PM

Can anyone get it to work with Trillian Pro? I installed the Jabber plugin and did everything they said to get it to work but no luck :(

I was able to get it on Trillian Pro - as per the link that spectre posted. Although I have not had the chance to try the audio chat yet.

 That was excellent.

It'd sure be cool if this Google IM service had the easiness of use that AIM has. People like to bash AIM, but every AIM clone I've tried that is ad-free seems to be lacking essential features that AIM has. Some you can't send IM's with the "Enter" key. Some you can't move past the side of the screen so you can X it out fast. Some don't let you minimize IMs and the app, just one or the other. All of them have something blatantly annoying. I'll stick with AIM with its ads until I find a clone that does it just as well. Maybe the Google IM will be the one. :)

I agree totally. People bash AIM a lot, but it's got some solid features (in-message image transfer) that, as you said, other clients lack.

Google Talk is so-so. It's a good attempt to combine VOIP and IM, but we all must realize it's stil a beta. It has some good features, like the way it handles the actual message windows. Krycheck taught me that by pulling one window completely over another, they can stack. You can do a lot of sweet docking and resizing crap.

maleficent 08-24-2005 05:25 PM

this is kinda neat....

Oh true. Oh so true.

Heh, great to see that this has turned into a GMail invite thread. "I only have 50,000 invites left! It's very exclusive."

Hardknock 08-24-2005 09:58 PM

Who else wants invites? I'll hook you up.

Hit me up at hdknock@gmail.com and send me a PM also to tell me that you did it.

Thanks.

SecretMethod70 08-24-2005 11:30 PM

Google Talk looks very promising. It's very early in development right now, so there's a lot missing, but I can't wait until it matures. FINALLY, open IM!

wdevauld, could you explain what server2server is and why they removed it?

QFE - it's impressive for the first public beta.

If you want to keep AIM and lose the ads, download Resource Hacker and do some reading at http://jon8rfc.homeip.net/ (has info on the latest AIM versions) or http://wint.virtualplastic.net/hacki...tegory=3rdPApp (deals with the older AIM versions, but more indepth)
