The Mighty Mouse
 

Well I just got my brand new Mighty Mouse from Apple. This is Apple's first "2 button" mouse with scroll wheel and programmable side buttons.

I'm not impressed. The mouse doesn't perform well on a white desktop so it requires a mousepad of some sort. The wheel is actually a little rubbery button that, as my coworker put it, "feels like a nipple." It takes some getting used to but seems to function well.

The side programable buttons have a weird feel to them, for me it was difficult to determine if I was "clicking" on them hard enough, or maybe too hard.

The mouse still doesn't have 2 buttons, the solid top area has them underneath the plastic, sort of like a regular G5 mouse but it senses when you've "right clicked".

All in all a pretty disappointing mouse from Apple. I told my coworkers I was going back to my old mouse and they said they had already done so.

No offense to Mac, but I've never been impressed with their mice. I've always felt like they were behind the times in that aspect.

I know no one really wants to hear a mac bash, but I have to say it .... mac should have stayed software engineers.

Anyways, i've never been much of a fan of the mice that Apple has put out. I do like their computers very much though. Currently I am sporting an older iBook that gets better battery life and better wireless connections than that of all my friends' PCs....

Also i think it's funny how when Apple releases something, the PC market quickly tries to catch up and duplicate what Apple has so eloquently marketed and made millions on--- GUI's, Colour screens, standard floppy drives, PDA's, reliable OS's and mp3 players. heh apple has always been ahead if their time....and will remain to be for a long time :-)

I'm with you on this one. I love my 14" iBook (i'm a pc guy by nature and nurture) and I can't believe the battery life I get.

Hey, that's neat. Thanks for the FYI :) Then I'll rephrase - They should have never become hardware people.

Personally, I think the Mac OS is pretty good. However, the hardware is horrible. That's why I use M$ - 3rd party hardware is always going to be nicer. Specialization is totally awesome.

As I said I respect Mac, just dislike the HW, and I don't want to start anything :)

Just imagine, though, if M$ made mice.... oh wait.

Well I agree that the hardware could use some help, and it is getting some help. OSX already runs on an x86 platform (ie. intel processors).

I think apple has made it's processor moves very well...Starting with motorola then moving to IBM, then on to Intel. I think moving to an x86 based platfor will definitly open up doors for the mac OS to use more powerful processors like the xenon line or even AMD's mighty Optetron line. :thumbsup: It would not surprise me if Apple has their archetecture running on an AMD platform too.

The first computers i used were: Mac classic, and an HP apollo...(UNIX) I am a PC guy, recently turned mac. I would say i am bi-tectual... :suave:

I'm a big PC user but I've always liked Mac but I didn't purchase one as most software that I use isn't compatable with it. Mac's hardware is perfectly fine IMO, very simple. If you look at the PC's mouse market, they got a whole wack of mouse that goes from simple 2 button ball all the way to mouse with 80 buttons and couple wheels on them (Anybody remember Microsoft's stragety game mouse?)

I'm a PC guy. But I do like my iPod mini a lot!!!

My brother has an iPod, and I really don't like it very much. However, I will say that some of the other portable apple crap isn't that bad. The mac mini is neat, if I can get my hands on one I'd like to try it and become familiar with mac. It's like learning another language :)

I do realize they're switching to new processors and stuff, that pleases me! The more I think about it, the more I would like to familiarize myself with Mac and *nix :)

i've always been a unix user....it was one of my first OS's
now i'm just using macix :-P

I'm opposite as most of you guys. I love Apple hardware, but am not a big fan of their OS. I especially love their gorgeous looking huge LCD monitors their have. I'd do anything to get my hands on that 30 inch Cinema screen.

As for the mouse, I haven't tried it but I think it looks pretty cool. I wouldn't mind having one even for my Windows based system. Does it come in a wireless version?

i don't believe so, but it wouldn't surprise me if one was in the works.

Not yet; the general expectation is that one is coming, and it will be Bluetooth.

Apple's big draw has always been thier creativity, while microsoft has used the bigger = better motto creating massive mice and trackballs Apple prefers a more streamline simplisitic approach. I only own PCs and it excited me that i too could just plug it into my PC and have it work, with two drawbacks, A. It'll probibly not be as slick with my PC and B. I've never actually seen it work in person. I've always loved the standard mouse, but always thought i'd die without my scroll wheel, so this may be the solotion for me, it looks slick as hell. and any of you apple haters, just walk into a compusa somewhere and look at thier 31 inch display and you may be converted too. However, you will be quickly transformed back when glance at the 3 grand price tag

I thought that the Microsoft mouse was designed out-of-house, and just branded Microsoft, wasn't it? Ah, doesn't really matter anyway.

As for the mighty mouse, I was going to goto the store when they released it just to try it out, but it was jam packed. And I still want to go in and try it out one of these days.

I saw a picture somewhere that you're not supposed to hold it like a regular mouse, your fingertips are supposed to curl over the top, so instead of your fingertips clicking the buttons, the first joint down from your fingertips clicks the buttons.

I just treated myself to a mighty mouse today. My old mouse was going crazy, I think the optical sensor was giving up, as the arrow would suddenly start shooting all over the screen at any given time.

I will have to agree that on first impressions, I'm not terribly impressed. I wasn't happy with being unable to fully custimize all the buttons (although USB Overdrive fixed this), and the scroll ball seems...to fast. I can't slowly scroll down a page. It either zips down fast or won't go at all. I guess I just have to get used to the sensitivity of it perhaps.

My major beef is with the touch sensitivity of the "buttons". Example: if I want to right-click on something I can ONLY be touching the mouse on the right side. I generally like to left click with my index finder and right click with my middle and/or ring finger. When I'm right clicking, my left finger generally rests on the left button.

However...

With the touch sensitivity of the mouse, if my left finger is resting on the left part of the mouse, even if it is not PRESSING down, merely touching it, when I click on the right part of the button, it still registers as a left click. So now I have to get into the habit of lifting my index finger off the mouse before clicking. Bah.

Probably all things I can get used to, but I guess I was just hoping for more.
