No sound when playing DVD's
 

I just popped in a DVD and it plays but with no sound, My speakers are working..I can hear the dead air through them.

When i watch something i download of the net..I get sound no problem.

I can't really give much information as i don't really know to much, I know it's a samsung DVD writer/Recorder, I installed all the software that came with it.

I'm Running XP Professional.

Is there something that i need to download to get sound?

I've never had a DVD burner, but I'll take a guess:

CD-ROM drives have a sound cord that goes from the CD-ROM to the soundcard on your computer. I'm betting that the DVD-ROM has a cord as well. It probably plugs into the back of the DVD-ROM and goes straight to your soundcard or onboard sound on the motherboard. If you don't have this cord plugged in, there's no way for the computer to play the sound from the DVD-ROM. If the cord is the same as a CD-ROM cord, it's long and skinny with a rectangular end on each side. Look for a female connection on your soundcard or onboard sound chip to plug it into.

Again, this is just guessing since I've never owned a DVD-ROM drive. Good luck!

I only have my DVD-ROM, I have no CD-ROM drive :confused:

Reread my post, I made a correction (I put in CD-ROM when I meant to put DVD at one place). Sorry for the confusion! You don't have to have a CD-ROM drive. You just need a sound cord that should have came with your DVD-ROM (if my guesses are correct). Plug the sound cord from your DVD-ROM drive to the soundcard or soundchip on your PC. Again, I may be completely wrong, but I don't see why a DVD-ROM wouldn't need this cord.

Yeah the thing is usually called the CD-IN or CD-AUDIO port. Basically you have a female connector on the back of the drive (DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, whatever your optical media drive is, im just going to refer to it as the "drive"), and then a female connector on the motherboard or the sound card.

If the comp came from some comp, like Dell or Gateway or any company, it probably has this cable installed. Go into your sound options (little speaker in bottom right, it's on the taskbar) and make sure the "Mute" option is NOT CHECKED under CD-AUDIO or CD Player or whatever.

If someone built it then it may not have come with this cable (I never use them for some reason...). You need a cable that looks like this:

Generally it appears as though MOST mobos support MPC2 ends.

Could be a player/codec issue. Do store-bought (non mp3) music CD's play?

You don't need the cd audio cable. It's mostly vestigial unless your equipment is ancient. I wouldn't expect you'd find a box that needed it less than 5-7yrs old. Just open device manager and check properties for your DVD drive. Make sure "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" is checked.

I thught that was the case. I don't get why it's on mobos and CD drives still, then - but that explains why I can listen to CDs without that dumb cable.

My only true question is - is it required for the "plug the headphones directly into the CD player" gimmick? Initially I always thought that is what the sole purpose of it was, but I really can't say.

It is nice for other peripherals though ....... kinda. My tuner card had the CD-IN jack on it so I could hook it into the CD-IN on the mobo..... i'm not sure why it couldn't have just gone thru the PCI slot and out the audio jacks, but whatever.......

Ya, Store bought CD's play with sound.

I checked the device manager and everything seems good there.

My computer was built within the past 7 or 8 months, I checked for any cables coming out of the back of the DVD drive, I didn't see any extra wires hanging that were unplugged.

So maybe it's a codec issue?

It's a store bought DVD and no, I haven't tried other DVD's..I will though. Gonna check out this Gspot first though.

I installed Gspot and opened the program..I have no idea how to use it though :/

Normally when you run a DVD you use a seperate program to view it. (ie: WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc... unless you use WMP10)

Perhaps you have the volume all the way down or on mute in the program itself?

Just throwing out an idea here, not trying to insult anyones intelligence.

I have been trying to play it through WMP, I do have the option of playing it through..I think it's WinDVD, I know it's a player and a recorder, But it won't open unless i upgrade it..And it aint free..Which is kinda fucked up.

So what you suggested is a possibility.

I use Media Player Classic for dvd playback.
Freeware.
