Hard Drive Problems
my hard drive on my toshiba laptop is starting to make a grumbling/grinding noise, my computer isnt really that old 3 years but im wondering if this means that my hard drive is going down the shitter, ive been backing up stuff all day just in case, but could this be another problem or am i doomed to wasting an entire day re-installing everything sometime soon

A grinding noise from a HDD normally means that it's dying. Just go by another 2.5 inch HDD and switch them. You could probably use the dying HDD in a 2.5 inch inclosure and have a nice portable drive for efficent file transfer. I wouldn't want to keep crucial data on the dying one for obvious reasons.
There is another possibilty that the grinding may just go away. I had a 120 GB Western Digital and it would make a grinding noise, and the system would lock up for a second or two. That problem went away though, and I still use it today. |
Most of the time, it means its going. I just had to order another HDD. An older IBM Deskstar went down on me (heavy HDD use definitely shorted its lifespan). Your better off backing up the HDD and replacing it with another if it has crucial data on it.

Bad news dude... lost mine last week after hearing the same thing.

I agree, your probably about to loose the HD.
In the world of technology, 3 years may not be ancient, but it's not a young pup either. It's not uncommon to start seeing hardware issues after 3 years depending on use. |
especially if you've constantly moving your laptop around.
i took mine to school almost every day. all that shaking and stuff can't be that great for the hd. i replaced the hd in my toshiba satellite after 1.5 years. very easy to replace. just buy a new one and pop in your recovery cd. everything should be just like new. |
Backup what is important ASAP!
|
thanks for the help....well i backed up everything, and its been a week and everything is still running....for now
but what hurts the most is that i had the best buy 3 year warranty on it and the warranty ran out about 3 weeks ago.....great timing |
What company made the hard drive, most of them are good at sending replacements. You should try calling them directly.
|
well it finally died....oh well
but today i broke down and bought a desktop, but i still have intentions to fix the laptop but i dont feel like dealing with it right now |
a decent new hd cost about $80.
all you do is take the old one out and put the new one in. put in your recovery cd and you're set. very simple. |
Bummer dude.
