Converting music tracks into MP3 files - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

I have been taking some of my old 331/3 records and cassette tapes and converting them into MP3
files to put on my MP3 player and use TOTAL RECORDER program to do this. I know all CDs sound
better than my tapes or records when changed into MP3 tracks but am wondering if you use a similar
recording program and if you have good results or not. Total Recorder seems to work better with
spoken word files and was made (I think) for talk shows and I use it for that also.

So what do you use or do you just download your music from iTunes or a similar setup?

if you record them into .wav files first, there is this program that does wonders

audacity works to edit wav files too. and is also free. good luck and happy converting

The general advice I've seen is that, if the albums you are looking to convert presently exist as CDs, it is much more time, cost, and especially quality-effective to just purchase the damn things. Buy them used, if necessary. On the other hand, if they are rare recordings, or you have way too much free time, go ahead.

I have a whole cupboard full of old vinyl (mostly house) that I've been wanting to get into mp3's for the longest time. Like RedLemon said, most of the time if you can get it in a digital format, it's better to just buy/download the damn stuff.

I usually just start up MusicMatch in record-mode and let it record the entire one side of the vinyl into mp3. Then, using some kind of editing software, I chop it up into the respective tracks.

It's a schlep, but the only way I've been able to listen my old stuff without having to lug a turntable with me everywhere I go.

I would like to create CDs that map to the Vinyl records that I have. Is there anywhere that you can download the album covers, to print into CD sized covers?

I have a cassette tape of my high school garage band that I plan to record by running it into the line-in on my iRiver H340. Seems like far and away the easiest way, given my hardware setup.

ratbastid has a great idea there. a twist to it, with the sony md player, you can get inputs and have it dub to the md's. the netMD players i believe may convert into mp3's and store lots on a md. may be the cheapest and quickest way to go.

Have any of you tried cool edit pro? It's great for editing wav/mp3 files. Especially if you're trying to get rid of white noise and other hiss from recorded sources [like vinyl or cassette]. Also, it can be used to amplify certain signals that are degraded/lost on tape.

BUT...Cool Edit 2000 version is still really powerful. There are hacks for the reg key online if you google it...or pm certain people who seem to know about it. Heck, they might even have the full install around somewhere...
