PHP vs. ASP .NET
 

What are your thoughts guys? I've been doing all of my development in PHP, but a couple of the guys in the office do ASP .NET and it looks like we're making the move to doing all ASP .NET work. We bought a whole bunch of training material on it and other things, I tried ASP (2.0?) a while back and I did not like it, can anyone lead me in a good direction on learnin about ASP .NET and the .NET platform (specs, advantages, tutorials, etc). Personally, I have primarily been a MS guy, but PHP is nice and has it's uses.

.NET, it will help you when you get to the "real world". You are more likely to find a .NET shop then you will a PHP shop..those are the breaks out there.

I am not a big fan of ASP, .NET, or MS for that matter. I gravitate more in the direction of PHP, although I greatly prefer Java over all other languages that I have touched, which include ASP,PHP,VB,C,C++, and obviously Java...so I have slept around a little bit. MS sometimes leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Yes, very true, you see tons of adds for ASP .NET jobs, but few for PHP. It's all the same really, just learning syntax, at least until you get into the higher level stuff. Anyway, I'm going down the ASP route, going to be using C# tho, not VBScript, cuz I need my semicolons damnit!

I stopped developing using Microsoft technologies. Why? Any time I wanted to do something which wasn't already part of the sytem I had to shell out money. I recall (awhile back now) even sendimg email via ASP required me to buy some $30 software.

PHP and all its open-source cousins work well together and there's nothing you can't do or accomplish. And I'd stay away from running PHP under Windows. There just seems to be more issues getting Windows to work as nicely as Linux in that regard. Your mileage may vary but I'm sticking with the Penguin.

Well, I have yet to dabble in ASP .NET, and I think I'm going to hold out for as long as possible, as I'm fully comfortable with PHP and don't want to take the plunge again for learning a new language. We run a windows server in the office that I do some testing on, but our production server is Red Hat Enterprise :) Just finished up a nice little webstore software that lets us offer paypal powered webstores for the technologically inept. I got a big kick outta an error we were having on our in house box today. Was running really slow and acting funny, turns out the guy who does the ASP .NET programming in the office messed up somewhere, because MS SQL Server was taking up almost all of the servers resources and was occupying a 2.5gb swap file, gooood stuff. I'll keep my MySQL thank you.

So... keep MySQL and ditch MSSQL cause some moron can't setup a server properly? Hardly grounds to ditch one technology for another.

Well, if you have used Java then you can use C#. I have had to use both in my last job. The good thing about using MS is all of the documetation. Otherwise, I say learn both because most jobs require both. Atleast here in AZ

php seems more user friendly
