MAME
Are any of you into MAME, multiple arcade machine emulation. Any of you build your own arcade machines for MAME?
Joust is the best. -happymaan |
Yep, I built one recently. Here are the photos of it from start to finish. I posted about it a while back in the games forum. Very fun stuff. Have you built one yet?

I play MAME on my PC and have plans to either buy or build a MAME cabinet. I thought about buying an old upright arcade cabinet but after seeing what thecow built, I may need to rethink it.
btw - thecow, your cabinet looks fanstastic! well done! |
Here's the one I built. I decided to go with revamping an old machine, I like the classic feel.
You can sort of see the blue backlighting behind the glass. The flash makes the tape masking job I did look horrible, but it looks fine in real life. It has 5 joysticks. One 4 way joystick for the old games like pac-man that don't like 8 way joysticks (they don't like diagonals). And then four 8 way joysticks. They can be programmed (using a batch file) to either be set to a 2 player mode or 4 player mode. A nice thing about the 2 player mode is that for the old games that were 2 player with one joystick where they would just switch off using one joystick, now each person can sit at a joystick and not have to switch seats each time someone dies. In 2 player mode the player 1 joystick is mirrored on the 1,2, and 4th joystick. 4 player mode is perfect for games like Gauntlet or games where each player needs 2 joysticks, like SmashTV. The trackball lights up, but you can't really tell from this photo. And it has 2 cup holders and a bottle opener. Besides MAME it's also running laserdisc emulation with Daphne, so I can player all those laserdisc games. Those laserdisc games take up about 13 gig's BTW. It's really a lot of fun, if anyone is thinking of building one, go for it. It's really fun to see the look on someones face when them come to play place and see an arcade machine that plays almost every game. Girls actually like it too. :D -happymaan |
Have you thought about making a few more and selling them? You should be able to make a killing!
