What's eating all this space?! - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Okay, I have a 27 Gb hard drive partitioned so that I have 6 GB available on the C drive. Recently I got a message that I was Low on disk space on C. So I went to clear some stuff out and and after deleting everything in the Temporary Internet Files folder it still says it contains 658 files taking up 2.81 gig of space. I checked the folder setting to make sure I was able to view hidden files, but I don't see anything there!! Does anyone have any idea what may be going on? What's taking up all this space in that folder?

Currently I don't even have enough free space to run a defrag on the drive. I'm guessing that would help, but I with all of these mystery files cloggin things up I can't do anything.

If you're running WinXP you'll also want to check your system settings for the variable the assigns your TMP and TEMP folders and empty those out. If this is an older install look for a folder called Content.IE5 you can only see it in the folder browser (the left pane) of Windows Explorer, it's a carry over from IE 5 and 5.5 of course, but it doesn't ever get cleared out unless you manually delete it.

There's a nice program out there called sequoia view that lets you visually see all the files on your hard disk and their size. Check it out. Might actually be useful.

Is your virtual memory set by Windows or did you set it yourself? Do a seach for anything *.tmp and see how many come up. If you use Windows automatic update it's possible that some update files (no longer needed) are still left on your PC. It would be best if you can install some utility (I use System Mechanic) to hunt down obsolete files, broken links, clear IE cache, etc.

I think you should try <a href="http://www.ccleaner.com/">Crap Cleaner</a>. Don't worry, it's not malicious, it's legitimate and it's safe. It'll delete all the temporary crap and save you a lot of space. You can choose what you want to be cleaned and it won't delete anything important. I think if you run that you'll be able to recover a lot of space and then be able to defrag.

You could always use a program that comes from MS called diruse.exe. You can find the download at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...g/diruse-o.asp. Install this to c:\windows (that's how I do it anyway). An example of running it is:

Start->Run: cmd (get to a command prompt)
cd \
diruse /m /* .\

From there, you can "cd [dirnamehere]" and run the same command again to find out what subfolder uses the most space.

Awesome advice. I had no idea about the IE5 folder. It seemed my computer was putting a copy of every movie, music, game, and torrent file I downloaded into there. I wound up clearing out 3 gigs. I have no idea why it thought I needed a spare file for Eternal Sunshine, but there it was in it's 900 meg glory.

Very nice. I just found a gig on my server from a random backup that was made months ago.

Kick Ass!!! I wasn't able to DL the Sequoia View (the site might have been down), but I used Crap Cleaner and it freed up 3.2 GB on my drive!!!!

A program I use, probably v. similar to sequoia view, is TreeSizePro.

To clean up my hd I use Windows Washer. It's not free, but I like it anyway. Cleans up lots of temp files and MRU lists. Also cleans up unnecessary stuff left by Outlook, and Office, and has plugins (I think you can even write your own) to clean up temp files and mru lists created by non Microsoft aps.
