"Dual Disc" Dilemma

I recently (today) just recieved Mudvayne's new CD Lost & Found from Amazon. Now on the site, they said it was a "dual-disc" which I believed to mean 2 CDs or a CD and a DVD just like they've always been called. But no, this is a CD AND DVD in one disc on different sides.

So I did the first thing I do with any CD I buy and recieve in the mail: I began to rip it to listen to it on my PC. Why? Because my PC has 5.1 speakers, my TV doesn't, and I don't spend that much time in my truck. Apparently these things are designed to not be read by regular old CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives for reasons beyond my comprehension. It would spin it and spin it and try to read it, but to no avail.

I've tried everything. I tried using EAC and dMC's extraction tools. I tried to make a 1-to-1 copy of the CD side to another CD or DVD, didn't work. I tried making an image with Alcohol 120%, and even that failed. It's not that these programs can't function properly, it's just that the computer doesn't recognise that it's even there.

It's so lovely of Amazon to not put a warning up about this not being a dual disc set, but a two sided farked up disc. If I can't figure out how to rip or copy it, I'll just send it back. I ordered an Apocalyptic CD at the same time and they sent me the wrong one, but I don't care 'cuz I wanna get all of them anyway. So yeah, if you have any clue as to what I can do here, please respond. If not, I'll just send them back to Amazon and get what the hell I wanted: the right Apocalyptica CD and a Mudvayne CD that I have some chance of ripping to MP3 and Monkey's Audio to both backup and listen to while at my PC.

WTF? So you can't even play it on your CD-ROM? I would definately return it. Try asking for a version that can be backed up, if one exists.

Many copy protected discs, as far as I understand now, install low-level drivers on your computer to prevent programs like A120 and straight cd-copy from running properly. For example, programs like Starforce have these kinds of effects, and before you will be able to successfully duplicate the album you will have to remove it completely. There are guides and programs to assist in this process.

It could also be something altogether much easier to bypass. I remember reading a white paper not to long ago about current copy protection methods, and some of them can be bypassed simply by holding down the Shift key (to disable AutoRun) when inserting the CD. The best way to find out what you're dealing with here is to download a program like Protection ID, or just do a google search for cdr copy protection identifying tools.

Not much help, I know, but hopefully it'll get you started in the right direction.

It's not some copy protection software. I have disabled autorun on both drives and held down the shift key while inserting the discs. Also, Spybot's teatimer would have picked up on any changes to the registry or the installation of something. Believe me, I have encountered LOADS of copyright protected discs as an American with a fancy for German rock and metal. Since most of the CDs I get from overseas are imports, they come with European uber-protection on them. I've always been able to get around it, but my computer has always been able to read the disc. In this case it can't even recognize it at all. I'm gonna fuckin' call Amazon later. This is BS.

Interesting situation.
Couple of quesitons:
1. Can you read the dvd side ok?
2. Does the CD work in a normal cd player (discman or something)?
3. Do you have access to a system without Windows (mac or linux)?
I have had far greater success ripping with OS X and Linux. I never did manage to rip Velvet Revolver on XP.

I don't know if they still do this or if it's kiddy copy protection by now. But one form of copy protection is to write the music onto the CD along with a data file in the background. CD players ignore the data file, but PCs pick up on it, and are blind to the music. If that's what happened, it might guide your struggle.

Well, the dual-disc format is new enough that not all players are compatible with it yet. Here's a link that may help a little.
