wierd desktop problem-Fixed
my parents just bought a new dell desktop and their son-in-law installed sbcyahoo dsl after the dsl install nothing will appear on the desktop: no icons, i can't right click on the desktop or anything.
i can access programs by cntrl alt dlt to the program manager and opening the program from there. i can use the internet just fine. i'm wondering if the mcaffee software- they have the full suite including a firewall running or if the son-in-law (works for MS) turned all of the mcaffee off before installing the dsl. any ideas? i'd love to fix this without reinstalling various crap. thanks |
i just realized by looking at the processes that the explorer doesn't appear to be running i tried going to file>run> and typing in explorer.exe from the task manager but nothing happened.
ps it's taking me forever to type i jist broke my right wrist playing hockey |
One thing I can suggest is using an alternative to explorer. My Personal favorite is bblean. Try and go to www.bb4win.org and test out blackbox to see if it's good for you. You can also try going to run and typing in explorer.exe and see if explorer runs.

I would try muckluck's idea of typing explorer.exe in the run box.
Have you tried uninstalling the DSL program to see if it fixes it? Most times you don't even need the programs that come with your kit, just the drivers. |
A couple of things to try, attempt to boot the machine into safe mode and see if you get the same behavior, if not, disable any services that you don't recognize that could be causing a conflict, that or use the system restore wizard to roll the box back to before the DSL install (assuming that the install wasn't just coincidental).

That's what worked. Went in safe mode- did system restore before the dsl install and jusu went from there the modem recognized the computer even though "technically" the computer settings/date predate the dsl install. thanks |
