need some help..again..
 

I have been listening to CD's for the past couple hours on my computer, I just switched CD's and i get this...

I was having problems with low virtual memory awhile ago but have not had any warning notices pop up in the taskbar since i disabled some of my useless start up programs.
I have no idea how director5 player is on my system and if i even need it, I just listen to all my music through windows media player.

I don't know much about computers, But i love when you get messages like this and all it gives you is an OK button...Like, Don't give me any ideas on how to fix the problem or anything :mad:

So anybody got any advice on this?

4 gigs of virtual memory??? Isn't that a bit too much?? I mean it doesn't hurt, but where would you ever use 4GB of virtual memory...

4 gigs of virtual memory is ludicrous for 95% of users- sorry spectre.

a good standard to follow for your pagefile should 1.5 times the amount of physical memory. set the initial and maximum size to be the same, so windows doesn't have to work to resize the pagefile.

I currently have my virtual memory file managed by the system. Is this a good idea, or should I set it myself??

the problem I have with letting windows manage the page file, is that it constantly has to work to size, and resize the page file, depending on your needs. I'm sitting here trying to think of a reason this would be beneficial, and I'm drawing a blank hehe.

ok, say you have 512 mb of ram, and your page file is set between 768-1536mb. now you crank open photoshop and a few image files, and start using up some ram. windows will resize the page file higher to accomodate this temporary higher usage until you're done w/photoshop. but this resizing process will slow down your computer, especially considering that the hard drive is usually the bottleneck in today's machines with fast processors, ram etc.

if you have a decent size hard drive, it's much better to set your pagefile to be 1 size, so windows does not ever have to resize it. and you are the one who should determine the best size. if you don't typically use memory intensive programs, then 1.5 times your physical ram should be plenty. but if you know you do editing, or anything that chews up lots of ram, think about going 2x or greater.

and don't forget that nothing compares (yet) to installing new, real memory. there are so many affordable options, it's worth it.

Not for me. I bought my computer when RDRAM was still available, and being not so knowledgable about computers at the time, I went with the fastest ram out there. So now I have 256MB and don't feel like paying $500 for a GB of RAM. 256MB is kinda slow, but since I don't play a lot of games I'm not too much worried about performance. I'll be building a new pc rather soon, so my problems should be over with.

Nothing beats not even having virtual memory. I don't ever need more than 1GB and there is no reason to bring the HDD in to slow down the operation of memory.
