looking to buy tv, any suggestions?

a friend of mine (online) suggested this tv here
Sony KDF-50WE655 50" LCD Projection TV
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_t...96#description

so i went out to best buy to look at the tv, and i was truly amazed. it was one of the best tv's they had on display.
i'm not looking for a plasma, but a lcd or dlp rptv. i game alot and dont want to risk any burn in problems

best buy had this tv for $3000
but onine i can get it for just about $2800 including an extended warrany.

my price range is about $3000. if you guys have any suggestions/comments, anything is welcome.

the tv has to be atleast 50 inches because after seeing this one, i dont think i'd be happy with a smaller tv.

www.avsforum.com

browse the posts there. the forums are FILLED with people who have extensive experience with every variety of TV, whereas here you might find a couple people who have ~$3,000 TVs. (i have a Mitsubishi 48" RP-HDTV that is pretty badass, but people are paranoid about burn-in, so i won't recommend it. however, modern RPTV technology basically negates the potential for burn-in and has advantages over other technologies)

also, you can basically ignore the picture quality of the TVs on display at best buy. that isn't indicative of how the TV will look in your home. a big store has to split and amplify video signals to dozens and dozens of TVs, and each TV hardly gets a decent calibration that would show off its true potential.

I say, go with a projector.

If you have a dedicated room for your tv then the projector is the way to go. If not then Plasma or LCD is the best option. As mentioned above do lots of research on the avsforums.com site. They have an amazing amount of information from some of the biggest nerds.

The calibration of TV's at Best Buy pretty much ends when they plug it in and set the color to "Vivid" or whatever the brightest setting is... DLP is definitely the answer over LCD.

Would this also be true for projectors??

My dad just got a samsung 50 inch DLP tv and I am always stunned by it. It looks very good, and the fact that it auto-adjusts to the light in the room is pretty spectacular: no more glare on the screen.

not necessarily. in general, most videophiles will go with DLP over LCD, but LCD has closed the gap a lot recently and neither technology is perfect... it's more of a 'pick your poison' situation. personally, i just bought an LCD projector and couldn't be happier. i don't see any screen-door effect or vertical banding (two problems previously common in LCD projectors). :)
