What's the diff between IE & Firefox?

It seems like more & more people are praising firefox and saying that IE is garbage..I have never had any serious problems with IE..But all this stuff about firefox is making me curious.

Before i switch though..What's the difference? I have used IE for years with minimal problems.

Just wondering if anybody could fill me in on all the hype about firefox.

Personally, I can't find anything wrong with IE and don't really use FireFox, so I would also like to know what you people find so terribly wrong with IE. I'm pretty sure that FireFox has holes in it too, noone just found any yet (or maybe they have, I'm not too much into it).

i like firefox much better because it has more user friendly options.

One major issue with Internet Explorer is that it's riddled with security holes, and because it's the predominant browser at this time, more people exploit these holes. So far, I have seen very little exploits aimed at Firefox.
Firefox has great modularity. You can download hundreds of extensions that you can use to do what you seem fit. It also has a built in RSS feed reader and tabbed browsing. The popup blocker built in is the best I've seen so far also.
Go to http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ if you want to read more about it.

I strongly recommend it, but it's your decision which browser to use. If you're comfortable with IE, by all means, continue to do so.

Ok i'm trying out firefox and seems alright, But one thing.

When i try to access my E mail..I enter my password and it says that the information you are about to send is unencrypted..Never got this with IE, Not even sure if this is a firefox problem..I am assuming it is though because i never got this message before.

I have looked around in the firefox settings and didn't see anything about any kind of security settings for it..Can you maybe point me in the direction spived2 or anybody else? Thanks.

Ok even when i just hit reply to post this message i got the same message about not being encrypted.

spived2 02-22-2005 12:23 AM

Go to your Tools>Options>Advanced tab and see if the SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 are checked. If not, check them and see if you still get the problem. Besides that, I don't really know what to say, does it have a checkbox with "Warn me before blablablah" in behind it? It probably isn't an issue, I think IE does the same thing but you just disable the popup if you check/uncheck the box.

Some of the features that I find unique, is how easy it is to clear such things as history, cache, and cookies, with a single button, instead of internet explorer where you have to go through two tabs, and 5 buttons. I also like, that it has a profile manager, so that I can keep my bookmarks, and settings private from other users. Another thing I like is, how you can disable or set javascript rules, so that my browser window is not tampered, or resized. If anyone is in my situation, and can't run xp service pack 2, because it doesn't run very well, then using internet explorer puts you at serious risk of a whole slew of spyware. Especially the ones that use Active X, to install such things toolbars, or ad delivery programs, without your permission.

Main Advantages:
Extensions (Adblock, WeatherFox, TabbedBrowsing, I have a thread about everybodies favorite extensions)
No spyware/adware
No popups/pop-unders, or banner ads flowing across the screen
Fully customizable

Disadvantages:
WindowsUpdate does not work with it, I only use IE for that purpose

Latch 02-22-2005 02:47 AM

search for this.. there's a million threads about this kinda stuff.

I'm pretty sure that that dialog box has a "don't tell me this again" option. IE has it as well, but you turned it off years ago, so you don't remember that you did it.

I've been using Firefox for about two years now. Here's what I miss when I have to use a computer with IE:Plus, Firefox is extraordinarily customizable. Nearly everything about it can be tweaked. I've spent a bit of time on it, and now it works exactly the way I want it to.

IC3 02-22-2005 10:13 AM

Redlemon..This is a brand new computer i built and it's the first time i have gotten this unencrypted notice about sending it over an unsecure connection, And it just happened to happen when i switched to firefox..

Spived2, I did what you said and they were all checked..I'm gonna keep lookin around in the settings and try to figure it out.

Ah, I looked a little further. There's probably a GUI to do this, but I don't remember where.

So, type about:config in the URL bar, and set security.warn_submit_insecure to 'false'. Bingo, no more warnings.

Firefox is for the people that hate Microsoft and Bill Gates and Internet Explorer is for the people who are wise enough to not get spyware and adware. :) Internet Explorer actually looks better and has a much slimmer GUI than Firefox if ya ask me. Tabbed Browsing annoys the piss out of me and the the actual browser looks like it's designed for a Mac. I like my IE, it's never did me wrong.

I use firefox. I hate neither Microsoft or Bill Gates. I used to use Internet Explorer and was a vocal advocate of it. I tried firefox before 1.0 release and didn't like it, so I stuck with Internet Explorer. When 1.0 was release, I made a decision to switch completely to firefox for a period of two weeks to give it a full try. That two weeks was up long ago and I am still using firefox. I like the tabbed browsing feature, I love extensions like AdBlock, ForecastFox, Slashy, Dictionary Search, FireFTP, etc.

I didn't receive spyware/adware using IE because I know what to click/download and what not to.

Lasereth: You are wrong in your overall assertion that Firefox is for the people that hate Microsoft and Bill Gates and Internet Explorer is for the people who are wise enough to not get spyware and adware. That statement might cover a few people, but I doubt the overall whole.

I do use IE on occasion to be able to use Sharepoint Services, and some other MS specific web based applications.

However, Firefox shall remain on my machine as my primary browser until something else comes along that I like better.

I couldn't agree more. I've tried Firefox a few times now, and I hate it more each time I tried it. The most recent time I used it for nearly a week. I finally uninstalled it, never to be put back on my PC. I really don't understand why the hell people like it so damn much.

You can't honestly think people only use Firefox because they hate Microsoft and Bill Gates.. can you?

Lasereth 02-22-2005 06:02 PM

Ha ha I'm joking about the Bill Gates crap even though it does apply to some people. I seriously do hate Firefox though. I prefer IE any day of the week.

been using firefox since around .3-.5 (pheonix browser)
tabbed browsing once you get used to it is a big thing.
It adheres to standards better then IE
slew of nice extensions that are just lovely...(adblock etc.)
live updating bookmarks (rss feeds)
cookies are delicious delicacies
about:mozilla
nice UI
all that gecko goodness

anway about your mail problem...are you sure you are going to the same site as you are in IE if you never get this message in IE.
like maybe http instead of https
otherwise...
just click ok and it will not show you the message again.

kolila 02-22-2005 10:36 PM

from a security point of view, firefox warning you about the unencryted connection youre making with the server is a feature.
