A good investment?

A young friend of mine is always looking for new things to invest in and ways to make money. He's been telling me about this glass manufacturer that is creating new ways to make LCD screens and he thinks the company would be good to invest in. I'm not looking for "go for it" or "don't go for it" replies as much as I am just wanting to hear some of your ideas and general comments.

This is kind of a shot in the dark and I don't have a lot of time to say a what I feel, so don't feel bad about responding with little insight if need be

Here's a link he sent me:

Take care

i say nothing ventured, nothing gained....
A number of years ago I was living in the Seattle area and a good friend of mine was working for this little company up there. I had just received a small settlement from a motorcycle accident I was in, and he told me I oughta take $1000.00 and invest in this company he was working for. The company was a very small coffee roasting company with a couple espresso stands. My response was something like "No way. that company is selling coffee for 2 bucks a cup, there is no way in hell they'll be around for 2 more years". Yeah the company was Starbucks and I am still kicking myself in the ass for it.

Only invest what you can afford to lose, and realize that most investments of this nature mature slowly over time. Stay in it for the long haul and ya should do well.

Id say it coulndt hurt to throw a lil bit of money at it. I know that a bunch of the large korean electronics manufactures got together and are currently working on making lcd the new standard in tv. They are tryin to get the cost way down, so not having an lcd almost isnt an option. If this guy u know seems to know his stuff, he might figure out something they havent thought of, could yeild alot over time. If it does pm me and send me a check for the advice

investing in (the stocks of) a big corporation, like Corning, isn't nearly as much fun, or as productive, as investing in the smaller, more inventive companies. seems like this technology is the next logical step for technology in that field.. probably not a huge risk in investing in it, so long as you've done your research and noone else is planning something similar/better. that said, probably not a huge gain to be made either.

Like they always say - Be careful mixing business and family - its a recipe for disaster. Many people have stories of getting tips from friends, the tips are bad (unlucky, whatever) and it ruins that friendship.

Great advice. My father always taught me to not mix money and friends/family if possible. The same friend purposed an Ebay business idea to me and I skipped for the very reason.
