Dead Mobo?
windows xp
athlon 2200 256mb ram no idea on the mobo, but i suspect it overheated and is damaged I'm doing some computer work for a friend, here's the symptoms (os shouldn't matter as it won't go past bios) when the computer is turned off or rebooted, bios loses detection of the primary hdd secondary hdd cannot be detected video card suddenly stopped working processor had been having overheating issues for quite some time due to lack of a secondary fan (117-134 deg F) tried replacing the cmos battery, didn't help. any ideas? thanks for suggestions edit: the owner decided on getting a new computer, as the old one is borked. Have you tried flashing the BIOS? It may have just been corrupted. If that doesn't work then it would probably be safe to assume that the mobo is either dead or not functioning properly.

I hope he doesn't have any problems with the new one.
As for the overheating, that's actually quite decent for an Athlon XP CPU. They tend to run hot. My Athlon XP 3200+ is water cooled, and it gets up to around 110 degrees under full load. When I had my 2200+ with 5 80mm case fans, a 120mm and 80mm in the PSU, and a Thermaltake Volcano 11 heatsink with a noisy 80mm fan I never got a temp lower than 55C under full load in an air conditioned room. Most of the time it ran about 60C when gaming. It sounded like a jet engine was in my dorm room, but still had high temps.

I had terrible problems with AMD athlon cpu's.... It was always overheating and it ended up overheating my GPU and causing terrible visual problems etc.. I tried just about everything to get the heat down. Put Arctic Silver thermal paste on it, and even got to the point where I ran my comp with the cover off and a large room fan blowing through it. After a long and annoying return process with Newegg( they actually broke their return policy for me) I bought a Intel cpu and have been ever since.
