did you try Spybot Search and Destroy?

available here: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?l...&page=download

trying that now... will update.

no luck. it cleared LOTS of other stuff off, but not the stupid toolbar. i'mreally annoyed, ti's offering sex sites to my little sister here!!

this thread was similar, but i think they got it off with either adaware or spybot.

http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...&threadid=6486

but maybe you should also disable that install-on-demand feature too, for next time...

good luck

yeah, that's on Xupiter, which is another similar problem but that adaare and spybot can deal w/. I'm having no luck w/ either of them in this case.

have you checked in the running processes and startup applications for an offending program?? maybe you could track it down and delete it manually

LewisCouch 05-24-2003 07:09 PM

Sounds like you've got a nasty trojan or two. Search the net for any clue such as any of the porn site URL's or any identifier of any kind. I've cleaned up several computers that were very badly infected, and I almost always found a reference. Failing that, you'll have to determine when the offending program loads. Good luck, it can be frustrating.

if you have time, run a virus scan. If ad-aware or S:S&D won't clear it, it may be a virus. if it's not that, search your comp for every instance of the word "ystnxchcrss" (that's the name of it I presume), and delete EVERYTHING containing this, heedlessly.

Have you updated your Ad-aware reference file?

I know that i posted this in a different thread somewhere but,
have you tried deleting everything in your downloaded program files folder (c:\windows\Downloaded program files\). Close IE and then Delete anything that you don't recognize (or also everything in there). If there was anything important that was needed you can always d/l it again (i.e. shockwave, flash, etc).
I have used this as a "quick" fix to get rid of some of the toolbars when I don't have a chance to run spybot/adaware.

Also, you can try to hide the toolbar by going into view -> toolbars and unchecking any unknown/unneeded toolbars.

Hopefully this will solve your problem.

c:\format c: /q :)

gamer715 05-24-2003 09:51 PM

0001, how bout you try that and tell us how it works?

:D

You should probably use mozilla instead IE, if possible. It is much less vulnerable to this sort of bullshit. The lack of hits on google, or google groups on 'ystnxchcrss' leads me to guess this is probably a random string. Is it always the same? Also, try updating the referance files for ad-aware and spybot.

To keep stuff like that from self-installing on your system.

On your browser go to tools / Internet Options / Advanced Tab

Uncheck... Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)
