PC Making weird noises
I got this old pc in the corner running and then i heard a "tup dup tup" continuous noise.
It's the same noise (just once) when you turn on the pc, the "Tdup" noise. but this is when the pc is running, i hear this noise, like crackers going off or something. what is this?? a power supply going out?? hd going out?? here are the system stats 500mhz amd k6-2 processor. 192mb pc133 ram radeon 7000 pci video card ethernet 4xcdrw windows xp pro and this pc is on a lan w/ a good one and they share files and such. can someone plz tell me what's going on here? |
cant really tell from the description.
probably the hdd though. Unplug your hdd and boot....see if its your cdrom. just try unplugging moving parts and booting til the noise stops. |
yeah, it's coming from the hard drive.
i put a boot disk in w/ the hd power cord unplugged and no noises came out. so, the problem is w/ the hard drive. what does this mean, is it going out or what? |
Very well could be.......if it's a hard drive you have important stuff on it back it up. Then just run it till it dies.
|
ya, sounds like you're about to loose a HD.
the cracking sounds could be a short... might wanna keep an extinuguisher nearby just in case :) |
it doesnt want to go to UT with you!!! :P
yah... it could be the notorious "click of death" back up what you need asap... and be prepared to start from scratch... |

the one dying is the family pc. |
Yeah, back that stuff up now. You might also want to take a can of compressed air to the fans while you're in there. That'll save the proc!
Depending on what size your hard drive is, you could easily get a new one for under $100. Hell, probably under $75. Oh, one more time: back it up NOW! |
Just a thought, when was the last time you blew all the crap out of the fan and vents? Couldn't hurt.
|
yeah, i vacume the fan n heatsink sometimes.
and btw, i have a new problem. i just found that the shitty bios has a limit of 17gigs. so, if i buy an oem drive, i wont get the stuff to get past this limit can i download this somewhere online? |
