How Much HD space do You have?

My computer has ~640 gig, (with probably 120 free) which seems to scare most people.
How much space do you guys have?
How much would you have in an ideal world?

Nisses 12-10-2004 02:32 AM

About 600 Gig, counting my USB2 External HD too (3x200Gb)

free... about 80 I think, which won't be enough come next lan-party, arf!

time to buy myself another one I think :D

Ideally: enough to never run out of diskspace... But if you rarely throw things away, that's a financial problem... I might be ok with a 2-3 TB for a few years (hopefully)

Dragonlich 12-10-2004 02:34 AM

If we're talking about one computer, I have a 120 gig data disk, and a 36 gig (raptor) windows/application disk. That's all I need, because I have a HUGE collection of cd-roms and dvd-roms full of downloaded crap. I have some 80 gigs free in total.

(I also have a 30 gig harddisk in my Linux server, and a 1.2 gig harddisk in my olde laptop)

In a perfect world, I'd need 140 gigs just for my mp3 collection, some 200 gigs for my games, some 250 gigs for my movies, and some undisclosed amount (lots) for my naughty pictures and movies. I download some 60 gigs of god-knows-what a month, so I'd need loads of space. Probably a terrabyte just to be sure, and even that'd fill up pretty damn quickly.

Alternatively, I could just keep what I really like, instead of collecting everything, and I wouldn't need much more than I have now.

bal8664 12-10-2004 02:54 AM

I have 80 total and have trouble filling it. Probably because i dont have any videos saved and maybe like 500 mp3's total. I do keep a copy of all my programs installer
files on my pc though which takes up about 20gb. I can't see how anyone can fill like 600gbs, that just seems ridiculous to me. Must be digital packrats ;)

laconic1 12-10-2004 06:50 AM

I have a 40 gigabyte applications disk and a 80 gigabyte data disk. still have tons of free space on both drives for now, but I have about 100 gigabytes of pr0n archived on DVDs

Lak 12-10-2004 07:04 AM

aw man, why is there no "< 20gb" option?
us penniless students can't afford this "hard drive space" you speak of

the_marq 12-10-2004 07:24 AM

I have around 100GB and I don't think I need a lot more. I typically have only 3 or 4 games installed at any one moment (right now its; HL2, Doom3, UT2K4 and Max Payne2), so that takes up about 15GB, about 2 GB of pr0n and 7GB of mp3's. Add to all that about 10GB worth of operating system and apps and what else do you need? Burn the excess to CD's or DVD's.

Homey_V 12-10-2004 08:08 AM

450 Gigs... I need more space!!!!! So much to save, so little time!

heccubusiv 12-10-2004 09:16 AM

120 Gb, quater full

soccerchamp76 12-10-2004 09:52 AM

200 GB partitioned into 80 GB system drive and 120 GB data drive.

shadowalker 12-10-2004 10:11 AM

just under 750 gig's, have about 500 free.

Painted 12-10-2004 10:18 AM

120 GB drive, 108GB free :)

Then again all of my movies, mp3's, pics, are on my server.

sandeep 12-10-2004 11:42 AM

I have an 80 and a 120. The 120 is Storage, and the 80 is OS / My Documents.

I've gotten tired of wanting more space and more so buying more space. I bought a dvd burner last year and just archive things I want to keep. Works well, and keeps my harddrives empty.

bendsley 12-10-2004 11:45 AM

Around 500gigs or so in my computer(s), and both TiVos have 200gigs worth of space in them.

kutulu 12-10-2004 11:56 AM

I have a 160GB drive. Only about 20GB are free. I have a lot of DVD's I've backed up but have not burned yet.

Embic 12-10-2004 12:02 PM

i have 360gb's total and under 20gb free

Locke7 12-10-2004 12:12 PM

1 80 MB that is almost full but have 2 160's on the way because of great rebate deals, they were only 50 bucks each after rebate. Yes I woke up at 5:00am the day after thanksgiving.

12-10-2004 12:14 PM

Taking into consideration all seven of my computers I would probably fall about 750 gigs. I started backups today and will hopefully be done by the time I get home in 8 hrs. : ) :hmm:

SiN 12-10-2004 12:22 PM

...and how big is your penix?

/me looks in her pants ....

um...calculating out loud

of all the puters in the livingroom..

160 (bf)
160 (external)
120 x 2 (server)
80 + 40 (me)
-----------
680 gigs

does not include 2 puters w/ approx 200 combined, that are work machines.
does not include the cd/dvd archives, which contains lots of data as well as movies/video. over 1 TB there...

will be getting 1 or 2 160's soon, as I'm full, and the mp3 drive on server is as well.

:D

Dilbert1234567 12-10-2004 12:26 PM

i have 4 120's and i need more space, i still have 3 ide channels free, and i have 2 more pci slots i can shove ata cards into.

tropple 12-10-2004 12:31 PM

When my tax refund arrives, I'm adding a terabyte to the file server ;-)

aa1037 12-10-2004 03:42 PM

2x120gb in RAID-0

80 MB huh? Can you even fit an OS on that?! :D

ChrisJericho 12-10-2004 10:08 PM

274

1 X 74 gig Raptor
1 x 80 gig Western Digital ATA
1 x 120 gig Maxtor ATA

And I have a 250 gig Hitachi SATA on my Xmas list. :)

alarment13 12-10-2004 10:19 PM

in my computer i have a 20 gig and an 80 gig, each with about 5 gigs of space on it, I jsut bought a new 160 gig on black friday, but have not taken it out of the package yet.
I also have a 250 gig external which has around 180 gigs of space left.

lunchbox 12-10-2004 10:29 PM

I only have 120gb because I don't have that much music (trapped in port blocked hell at college) and I don't save porn or pictures, I don't have many videos (the first 100 or so of Naruto) 70gig still free. HL2, CS:S, CS, UT2k3, UT, KOTOR, JK2, HL, +600 or so ROMs all installed.

skaven 12-10-2004 11:22 PM

My fileserver (Slackware 9.1, Abit KT7A, T-bred 1466Mhz, 1G PC133) has 4 160G Seagate drives in a RAID-5 array, for around 480G of usable, protected disk space. It's about 77% full now.

jon_264 12-13-2004 01:23 AM

I have 520 GB on my windows PC and about 160 GB on my Linux Server. The plan is to eventually move alot of the drives onto my Linux Server and cut the windows PC down to a bare minimum. I think I need to do some housekeeping on my windows PC though as I am using about 75% of the available space and most of it is crap I'll never want or use again.

MooseODV 12-13-2004 01:41 AM

Dang... I guess I'm definitely on the lower end of the scale. I have 40 gigs in my primary computer, 30 in my secondary, and a 80 gig USB2 drive. The external drive has all my mp3s, vids, and the such. Need to get a bigger one and start backing up those dvds...

-Anders 12-13-2004 02:41 AM

Meh, 860 MegaBytes in my laptop. With a whoopin' 330 MegaBytes of free harddisk space.
It's too slow (75MHz) to play MP3's/OGG's anyway, thus I have no real need for any extra space.

tropple 12-13-2004 04:00 AM

Is anyone using SATA with RAID?

Eight 12-13-2004 05:16 AM

60GB

15GB free.

Only use it to play games so dont need any more. Install game, play it to death, unistall it, play next (or leave it on if it has good MP)>

godxzilla 12-13-2004 11:32 AM

i had a friend that used to trade movies and he would keep anywhere from 500GB-1TB disk space in his system at one time. I always thought that was overkill but now am realizing that more disk space is always good. with over 90GB of MP3's and a few movies, i need space too! I have a 160GB and 2 80GB. My server (gentoo linux) has 4 74GB scsi drives in it -

doing the math, that would equal 608GB

Knoweffects 12-13-2004 03:17 PM

none, my HD is DEAD, this a friends computer.

Kadath 12-13-2004 03:30 PM

I sprung for a 250 and I'm happy now. With 160 of that free, I think I'll be okay. I was inspired to get the 250 when I started to collect MST3K eps. At ~700MB/episode, I was filling my 80 GB fast. Then that failed and I was even happier. So now I have my old 13 gig as a Windows partition, and nothing else gets installed on it.

Holo 12-13-2004 03:57 PM

73.6GB

2 30's and an older 13.6. I had an 80GB WD 8MB cache deal but it head crashed on me and I haven't bothered RMAing it. If you keep on top of it I don't see why you need over 100GB at this time, especially with a DVD burner. OLnly thing I could see is intense hi-res img work or the obvious, video editing.

Slavakion 12-13-2004 04:13 PM

150 gigs, and 100 free. I think I have plenty of wiggle room here.

sailor 12-13-2004 04:57 PM

300 gigs--80 in my desktop, 20 in a server, 40 in my laptop, and a 160 external drive. I want another big one to use for backup purposes.

haha that sucks! you can find great deals on HD's all over the net these days

littlebighead 12-14-2004 02:40 AM

120GB on one machine, 250GB on another. When I was younger, my HDs would be crammed full of porn, but now they're crammed full of DVD backups. :) I've been meaning to get a new disk, but I'm trying to wait for the right time to jump to SATA. Keeps getting cheaper.

Mephisto2 12-14-2004 03:07 AM

What the hell do you guys store on these things?

I have a 120Gb RAID 0, plus a 18Gb Raptor UWSCSI 10K rpm system drive... and it's practically empty.

Mr Mephisto

bundy 12-14-2004 03:16 AM

140Gb on my PC and 40Gb on my powerbook.
250Gb is coming in the mail.

I like collecting .shn's (mainly concert recordings/bootlegs) they can fill up a hard drive real fast.

I got a 200 gig external drive I keep most of my music on, an 80 gig internal drive in my workstation and a 60 giger in my thinkpad.

NeoRete 12-14-2004 12:42 PM

520 gigs in all. I have 2 - 180 gig seagates in a RAID-1 array and an 80 gig drive in my rig. A 60 gig in an external backup, and 20 gigs on my iBook. I mainly use the rig for video editing, so it can fill up fast. Thankfully it slows down after the holidays, so I can archive most of it and free up around 40 gigs before the new year.

Wyodiver33 12-14-2004 05:08 PM

Had a WD 80 GB for XP and a 15 GB Maxtor for Linux. I was getting tired of juggleing stuff on the 80 GB drive. I just added another WD, a 120 GB 8MB cache for windows. Comfortable for now, but I will probably get another WD 120 GB drive soon.

brandon11983 12-14-2004 11:25 PM

I have 80 GB in my PowerBook and I'm always teetering on the brink of filling it up (have many times already). Right now I have 2.88 GB free. I'm eyeing a 200 GB external Seagate for it soon.

Confederate 12-22-2004 08:57 AM

I should have around 328, based on advertised size, but it ends up being closer to 300

sashime76 12-22-2004 09:11 AM

240 GB now, one is 160 the other is 80. I backed up tons of stuff on CDRs and DVDRs, somewhere around 200+ discs.

silent_jay 12-22-2004 10:14 AM

I have an 80GB, and it has maybe 5GB free at the moment. It gets filled up too fast then its time to clean it up and debate for a week what I want to delete and what I want to keep.

I've been looking at a 200GB Western Digital, the price just dropped again it's now down to $84.97CDN. Might be soon time to pick it up I guess.

Rodney 12-22-2004 10:21 AM

About 140 gigs over two drives; one (80 gigs) is used only for video projects (amateur/public access). I'm all the time juggling space and projects; there are bays for two more drives, and I'm considering it.

godxzilla 12-22-2004 11:13 AM

Just lost 160GB to my tivo. Had to move everything off it from my PC but its worth it having a 174 hour tivo in my livingroom! :)

MageB420666 12-22-2004 11:55 AM

I've only got a thirty gig hd in my laptop, hoping to get a 120 gig external, but I'm a broke college student so it's not likely to happen any time soon.

blindawg 12-22-2004 12:19 PM

Laptop has 60GBV, PC has 80/200, SNAP server has 80GB. ANd Old Crappy G$ box has a 40gb and 3 120s all packed full. I fkeep having to throw stuff on to DVD.. Someday I hope to kick my dling habbit.. maybeth MPAA or the RIAA can lend me ahand..
