DVD software

Howdy, all

I just threw a DVD into my laptop's disk drive, and low-and-behold, nothing'll play the darned thing. Apparently, I don't have any DVD-specific software installed, so neither mediaplayer nor winamp will read the disk. Thus, my question:

What do you recommend for a free DVD-software download. I was just over at WinDVD, and it requires you paying, which is not really my bag. So, what do you all think I should go with? And, as always, links are appreciated.

Thanks for the help, guys and girls.

Windows media player does not play DVDs unless a 3rd party decoder is installed.

There are no free ones out there. I use Power DVD personally, I've found it to be the best. You can always use your favorite try before you buy P2P software

I spent a lot of time looking for free DVD Playing Software, there are no legal ones out there.

Once you install the DVD software, Windows Media Player will use their decoder to play DVDs. I've found that I just prefer to use the software.

There are a few reasons why I like PowerDVD. First one is that it will take a widescreen format DVD and "Smart Stretch" it to full screen which is nice if you don't have a widescreen laptop. It also has some battery saver features which is nice if you have a laptop. It has some special audio processing and full 5.1 (or 7.1 I think) sound support which isn't useful on a laptop but it useful if you install it on a desktop that does have optical audio out.

Anyway here is the URL:

You can try before you buy.
