Senior Project Ideas

Hi. I am a senior computer science major. I need to do a senior project but do not have any ideas on what to do. I plan on using Java and have books on programming with networking and Java and celluar telephones with Java. I would like to possilbly make a network with cell phones. If anyone knows if this is possible or has any ideas for a project please let me know.

Nothing to do with cell phones, but.. Anonymous P2P sharing The world needs that like you wouldn't believe.

That's what I plan on doing, but hey, if someone can get it done before me, it'll benefit us all!

As for cell phones... there's a lot you can do with that. It's hard to come up with something at the drop of a hat, I know, but... try to merge the portability of the technology and something that you do in everyday life that could be made easier by integrating it.

For example, I made a webapp that would give driving directions in the event you became lost. All you had to do was know your current location (address, city) and your destination, and it would spit out turn-by-turn directions.

Well...what would you really like a phone to do?

How about access something from a cellphone that normally would be only accessed by a PC? Wait...let's make it a Mac (extra C calls there...). I would advise against something easy like sports scores or other stuff that's already available. How about access something online like allmusic.com, and format it? Too easy you say? OK. How about accessing a custom network card that has been placed inside of your refridgerator? You could check the current temperature, humidity, and the state of any beer inside. I read this in a C book a few years back and it looked like a lot of fun. You could call the fridge with your phone and it would reply back with options, you select one or all, and get the data back....

Good luck!

build your own mp3 player and write a nice user interface to go with it.
not too terribly hard to do, but you definitely need some experience with soldering, electronics, circuits, and such. and c/assembly. not a java job.

this project just has a cool factor that you can't get in many other projects, though.

Also nothing to do with cell phones, but I did a motion tracking pan/tilt camera a few years back. Programming the interface with the camera was the hardest part. The motion tracking in itself was minimal. I was going to try for object recognition but ran out of time cause the Sony EV-30 (I think?) took forever to get at a reasonable price. It's a well documented camera though, and lots of people write software for it, so finding references was pretty easy.

Another plus, I sold it for $100 more than I bought it for on eBay

It was a fun project, and a hit at our presentation. Everyone walking around look at the different exhibits, and our camera was going apeshit tracking them as they walked by.

edit: the camera itself also has it's own motion tracking/object recognition, so you'd have something to gauge your own software against.

did you use another directions database or something? i can hardly imagine one person making a whole map database alone =P
