hiding folders
 

in windows when you hide a folder what exactly does it mean? i don't get this concept. if you hide it, too, how do you get it to come back?

tools>folder options>view

check the radio button next to view hidden files and folders

to "hide" a folder means to pull it out of normal view, and only allow it to be accessed when a user has set their computer to show hidden files. the only reason to use it is if you're running a machine with multiple users at multiple user levels and want to restrict access to specific areas of your computer to lesser users. other than that, it serves no real practical purpose.

Hidden folders can still be accessed if the person knows the name of the folder. If you want to restrict access, you need to set up proper permissions.

However a clever person can easily unhide folders. By simiply going to something like My Documents and making it's properties "show all (hidden) files", every folder within that folder can/will then show their hidden folders. I'm not sure if this always happens but I know it's possible.

Microsoft uses it mostly for hiding system files that they dont want people to delete by accident.

On W2K, NT, and XP, if you do not have the permission to list a folder, then it is effectively invisible. There's no way for a non-administrator to view it without permission.

Note, though, that this does not really hide it from ever being viewed. There a several methods to hack the NT password. Simply moving the hard drive to another computer negates the permissioning on W2K, and there are ways to reset the password on an XP drive if it's placed in a nother computer.

If you are serious about hiding the directory, you need to use a driver level utility to do so.

there's something called "Magic folders" that I use. It makes a password protected folder that doesn't show up at all, even using a bootdisk and working from a command line. Even someone with Admin access can't find or open this without the password.
