Wierd login problem...

Whenever I reboot my computer, it comes up to a blank background screen. THere are no icons, no start menu, nothing. If I Ctrl-Alt-Del it pops up the task manager. If I use that to log out, I get a explorer not responding to shutdown error, but then if I log back in, it works fine. Any ideas?

Ha ha. Sounds like you're fucked. It almost sounds like spyware or adware or perhaps a virus. Do you have an easy way of backing everything up?

That's about what happened when my harddrive failed. It did that about two or three times, then started telling me that I had missing dll's. Last it just didn't start.

Sounds like you are on XP or NT based on the Ctrl-Alt-Del bringing up task manager. First thing if you can get logged in, check your system log. Next, I would run virus scan, spyware scan and a drive check utility.

If you can't get in, try end tasking Explorer. Next restart it using the New Task button on your Applications tab.

Good luck. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

If you're on XP, perhaps SP2 would help?

are you able to get into safe mode? have you installed anything recently that this started happening after?

tropple: can't install SP2 if you can't get into the system.

irishsean: it's spelled, "weird" and not "wierd"

or go in the way you have reported and use a rollback point.
You have a rollback point, right?

system restore is for sissies!!

or for people who like to waste HD space, and time during installations when "creating" restore points.

Ideas

There are all sorts of resources here---> http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308041

This is for XP, but many will work for Win 2k as well.

If you can get to the Safe Mode option (Hit F8 at the beginning of the black screen with the white dashed bar at the bottom) and boot into safe mode you know your problems aren't with the basic system or basic drivers.

At that point you can use Last Known Good or System Restore or good old-fashioned troubleshooting to fix the problem.
