Networking 2 PC's

I have a router and i can share the internet connection.

But i want to access files from one computer to another pc.

The network setup wizard on one pc works fine, but it creates problems (finishes unsuccessfully on the other one, i tried doing it from the floppy, still doesnt work)

And something I did just screwed this situation up even more.

I go to start-> shut down, and instead of those 3 boxes that usually comes up, a windows xp box comes w/ the drop down menu's w/ the options.

also on start, it's asking for login information.

How can i make it so that it automatically logs in?

lemme give more info:

both are running windows xp.

connected through a router

"I go to start-> shut down, and instead of those 3 boxes that usually comes up, a windows xp box comes w/ the drop down menu's w/ the options."

Sounds lke the Welcome screen is turned off. To turn it back on, so to User Accounts in the Control Panel. From there, choose Change the way users log on and off. Check the Welcome Screen Box

The way I do it is through
Tweakui It has a lot of tweaks for XP.

As for the network problems, not sure whats going on there. One thing you can try is to go the the System Properties (Right click on My Computer & select Properties). Then go to the Computer Name tab. Try selecting Change, then select a different name for each computer. Create the same Workgroup on each system. They should see each other now.

ok, that solved the logging in/off problem.

but i still get these 2 to see each other.

both are part of the workgroup named "workgroup".

both have different names, and if i try to go to "my network places", and click on "view workgroup computers", i get an error saying "workgroup is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this netowork resource.."

why is it doing this???

Can you ping each machine from the other? On each machine, open a command (or DOS) prompt and type ipconfig. If that doesn't work, try winipcfg. Get the IP address for your ethernet card. Now in the same DOS prompt, type "ping (the ip address of the other machine)" without the punctuation.

IF DHCP is issuing each a private Class C IP address, it will look something like 192.168.x.x where x is a number between 0 and 255.

everything on both pc's are the same except the ip address.

the last digit of the ip address is off by 1 between the two pc's.

and i pinged it and it came back positive

Dude, (I hate starting a sentence that way). Make sure the admin has given permissions to share.

On each machine, click the drive to access, click sharing, tell msoft you understand, then follow through. Oh, make sure file/printer sharing is installed in the "network connection" properties where you find tcp/ip. Goto start, (in xp), mouse up to "my computers", highlight, (dont click), the drive you want, then right click properties. Follow the sharing instructions. You should be cool. If not, my email is in my profile.

I am assuming from your avatar you are a Texan. I am enjoying Stevie Ray (a Texan) via a sweet 'puter I made myself. It will kick the stuff out of your five hunred dollar gaming machine.
Either way, The_Dude, get with me if that stuff didn't work.
What a damn fine TFP day this is!

Make sure that Xp firewall is enabled on both computers and then try again.
