Quickest way to send files to others?
 

I have a few friends who i like to send files to, movies, songs etc, but the speed to send em seems slow, whats the quickest way to send files? msn seems to send around 15kbsec while Mirc 7kbsec, im no expert at mirc, so there maybe a quicker way, i just straight up DCC'd the files. Is there anything quicker? im on 1.5meg cable atm, with 512 upload i believe.

Assuming you are sending LEGAL media, irc is the quickest for me, plus you can resume the transfers.

have you tried FTP? You know, File Transfer Protocol?

If its like lots and lots of gigs of stuff...i just burn it and mail it to my friends...

if both parties are on broadband, I would actually give AOL instant messenger a try. if that doesn't go much faster, time to bust out the CD-Rs and run to the post office

AIM is good for smaller (<100MB) files. AIM doesn't have resume AFAIK so it's not a good choice for CD sized sends.

IRC is good, especially if you have an fserve so you don't ahve to be around for your friends to get stuff from you. They just hit up your trigger or triggers and browse for what they want and GET it. IRC supports resume, as was said before, so if you or your friend's connection shits itself it's not wasted bw.


FTP is also good for the same reasons an fserve is.

if you want to send stuff to more than one friend you could make an emule server or bittorrent tracker.

sneaker-net would be fastest for really large files. so long as your friends live in the same town.

otherwise setup an ftp server on your computer and have your friends download at their leasure.

FTP is your best bet. IRC is also pretty decent.

Err, even at 512 you are only looking at about 3 hours for a movie(assuming 640 MB). I really doubt your cable is that fast unless you have a "business class" cable. I would guess 6 hours would be more accurate. It would be best to just have them get the movies and stuff from the same place you are getting them.

BTW, I used http://www.visiongraphics-inc.com/tools/ftpcalc.html to get the transfer time.

I would probably try FTP, I would think it'd have the least amount of overhead involved.
