Digital Camcorder Tape Recovery?

We have a digital camcorder that uses the mini tapes. Well we've been using the same tape for soemtime now. Not overwriting anything just adding on each time we video tape something. The problem is that the first half of the tape seems to be damaged. The video looks like when you have a bad satellite TV signal, all blocky and the sound is screwed-up as well. The timer is skipping as well, jumping several seconds at a time.

Has anyone else encountered this? Anyone know of a way to recover it?

My wife is upset because our son's 1st birthday is on this tape. So, any help would be appreciated.
