trinitron tube
I'm thinking of buying a Dell monitor from TigerDirect with a Trinitron tube, but I've heard shiz about the "lines on the screen", like there's some wires you can see through the screen or something. Are these annoying, cause the monitor's a good deal and I've never had a problem with my Trinitron TV...
BTW would my 13-incher TV have these lines? I'd like to check em out |
I dont have one but my friend does, It was annoying for a while but then I didnt even notice it.
Thats just mine(and his) opinion. |
A number of manufacturers making CRT monitors (ie. Diamondtron™, Trinitron™) use aperture grille technology, which is a construction of hundreds of fine wires suspended in a vacuum.
The wires are held horizontally by one or two damper wires, which prevent the grill from vibrating and causing the image to blur. These damper wires may appear as two fine lines on the screen and are often more visible on a white background. They are an integral part of the design of this type of monitor. I have dual 17" Dell monitors with Trinitron Tubes and I have never seen as good image on another monitor. I never seen the lines unless I am really looking for them. They are a small price to pay for an amazing image. Buy it! |
What's funny is you never see those lines in a display monitor at the store..... My 19 Inch NEC didn't have them until a month after I bought it, At first I was WTF? Then after I found out they all have them I was pissed... but after a while you don't notice them except on light backgrounds, you can't see them at all on the TFP green on green...... the top one kinda annoys me when I'm Photoshoping or looking at teh porn, but you get used to it.

get it, you'll love it
esp if it's a 21" (hint: you can fit more boobies onto the screen) |
trinitron monitors are great and I definifly recommend a monitor with trinitron tube. i have trinitron monitors for years and never saw the two wires.
however DON'T buy from tigerdirect. i've heard many cases where they sold credit card numbers two other companies and they have very bad costumer service. I know there prices are great but you can get from dell even better prices after coupons. for dell coupons go to http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/categories.cfm?catid=18 |
I concur with all the above.
I have a 19" Viewsonic, and a 21" Nokia, both with the Trinitron tube. The lines might be seen if pointed out, but, you just don't see them, they are hairlines! Excellent images from both. I wouldn't have any crt that wasn't a Trinitron. I bought my Nokia here. Read the descriptions. These are off lease computer parts. My 885.00 Nokia was 350.+/-. I found this place from a TFP member on the old board. I was apprehensive, but read reviews and bit the bullet. I was not let down. |
consider the lines a "mark of authenticity"
|
yeah ditto what gatecrasher said, those shadow mask lines always make me think hq monitor, your eye doesn't notice them after a while, most high end SGI rendering mnonitors have those lines, no minds there.
|
I have three Dell Trinitron monitors. 15", 17", and 19". The only time I actually see the two lines is when a friend comes over and is pissed because the picture looks perfect. Much better than most everything else on the market.

A Trinitron is the best quality in the business, and there are usally 2 tiny lines. I have had my trinitron for 2 years now and I hardly ever see the lines. As for were to buy it from I would only buy from a good dealer. Not just some place with the lowest prices.
Good Luck |
i'm using a dell trinitron monitor now - the lines are noticable on a white background, but only barely.
i think the best quality monitor that i have personally used was the hitachi ultrascan 753 (they're sure to have better models by now) the screen was pretty, flat, and sharp, plust the lines weren't as noticable. great monitor! |
I'm viewing on a Sony Trinitron screen right now (Multiscan 200ES) and it's my second favorite monitor every. My most favorite monitor is the Samsung Syncmaster 17gL (and probably monitors of the same line) because of the quality, durability (it's ~7 years old), and because of the brightness and contrast knobs.
I hate the brightness/contrast controls that are buttons because with knobs, with a flick of the wrist you can black out your screen or turn it to full brightness extremely quickly. That's what I'm going to be looking for when I buy my next monitor. |
All aperture grille monitors will have it. You'll never notice them after a while, and they give the best picture quality barnone.

I have dual 21" Dell Trinitrons on my system and while I have noticed the lines when looking for them, they don't hamper my everyday work. I am a graphic designer, so the quality of the image on the screen really matters to me and I don't really even notice the lines most of the time. I got my Dells refurbed with a 1-year warranty from http://merkortech.com They had a great price, I think like $265 each. They only deal in refurbed monitors. You might want to check them out.

I have a 17" Sony Trinitron.. At first the two lines were a bit disturbing but soon I didn't even notice them.. The picture quality is great, definitely a good deal.

I've never been able to see the wires on my 21" ViewSonic
