Slow IDE detection
I have a machine here cobbled together out of spare parts. One HDD (IDE 0 , cable select), one CD-ROM (IDE 1, cable select), no floppy drive. Problem is, when it boots, it takes it a couple of minutes to detect the two drives. Both work fine, and as far as I can tell, should be detecting fine, but no dice.
The bios is set to disable the floppy, boot from CDROM first then HDD. Any help is appreciated--this is most annoying. |
Have you tried it with the correct jumper settings instead of cable select? Different jumper settings can make my BIOS hang really bad. Cable select always gives me trouble as well...I'd try to set them as Master or Slave instead of CS.

I've always had problems with cable select. Either it doesn't work or it doesn't work. :)
When I was cobbling together my own PC about a month ago, I thought I would set everything to cable select and let the PC sort it out. No dice. The first HD would work and the second wouldn't show up, One CD-ROM would show up and the other wouldn't or a problem combining the two. So, I just set everything back to Master/Slave and the problem disappeared. I can't say that's the solution to your problem, but I thought I'd share. :) |
Both of the cables I am using are cable select though--both only have one plug. I think I have some dualies here at school, but IIRC, last time I tried getting only one drive working on a dual cable, it didnt work.
This is so damned annoying. |
