Phantom Speakers

I have a pair of cheap Altec Lansing speakers that seem not to want to turn off. It's strange...I press the power botton "OFF", the little green light goes out buuut...I can still hear sound(although muted) come out of the speakers.
and if I turn the volume knob up the volume gets louder(while off)

So do I have a gremlin that resides inside my speakers, do i need an exorcist?
or are they just messed up?

Thanks

is it the sound that is playing on your computer? or is it a type of interference?

QuasiMojo 09-01-2004 05:59 PM

no, it's the actual sound from my computer coming through....hmmmm.
My speakers never sleep!

This rare for computers but it might be what is called "white noise". If they are powered speakers move the plug onto the same powerstrip or wall outlet as the computer, or vice versa (cann't remember)

it's not white noise if it's the actual sound coming through. sounds like you need to call the ghostbusters.

one time I had the neighbor's phone conversation come through my cambridge soundworks speakers once, now that I think about it.......that was awesome

hmmm...I have my computer and everything that is related- plugged into the same powerstrip. Its an awfully dusty place down there....I really should
vaccume more often...

another question is, is there a fire hazard possible. I've had this problem for 6 months or so.

I guess it's not a huge deal. I just don't like something being on after I turn it off. Dig?

shakran 09-01-2004 08:38 PM

Relax ;) here's the deal. The amp on those speakers is a passthrough amp. You can use the speakers either powered (louder) or non powered. When you turn 'em off they become nonpowered speakers. These used to be REALLY common, especially in speakers that could be battery powered or for which you had to buy your own AC adapter. I'm kinda surprised you have 'em now though - I don't believe I've seen speakers like that for awhile. Not that that means anything, I've not bought speakers since my last ones died over a decade ago and I started using a home theater receiver instead ;)

jesus shakran,!! I was just franticly going through my homeowners policy
when I got your response. :)
I feel better now. The only thing is...they're not that old(unlike me)
I have a seance scheduled for 4:35AM just in case.

Thanks again to everyone

shakran 09-01-2004 09:04 PM

heh. Well here's another secret. You can leave speakers on all day long and they won't catch fire unless something is very wrong with them (MAJOR wiring fault and even then it's iffy - that big block you plug into the wall is a power transformer which knocks the housecurrent down to 12volt DC. You have to work pretty hard to get 12V DC to set something on fire). If anything's gonna set your house on fire, it's more likely to be the wiring at the outlet you plug your computer into than anything on the computer itself.

QuasiMojo 09-01-2004 09:24 PM

I dig:)
my worry of a fire is secondary (my BIG BLOCK I PLUG INTO THE WALL is cool)
no,really, it's not even warm. hardly.
it's just that...
when I tell an electronic device(that I should have control of) to do something, i GODDAMN expect it to follow my instructions! Push a button/OFF. Push it again/ON.
Why do things have to be so complicated?

OK....I'm just getting silly.

shakran 09-01-2004 09:37 PM

let me get this straight. You use a computer, AND you expect it to do what you tell it to, every time?

Buddy, you're in for a whole lotta disappointment ;)
