I have the same problem. I think that it's something to do with the way that the windows spawn and open. I have not been able to find a way of keeping the status bar in the LOCKED position like the toolbars.

I hate the status bar, but I can't keep it invisible. Half the time I open a browser I have to go to View and uncheck it.

he's talking about ALL windows - this isn't a browser behavior problem.

My best suggestion would be to make sure they're all set to "locked" other than that I don't know

I have the same problem. Status bar on IE or windows will randomly turn off - regardless of Locked settings. Seems to happen on XP.

XP and 200 alike will randomly change window Views as well. Usually it is what you set but every so often it will change to List or something else.

No solution I'm aware of. Aside from changing operating system.

sorry, i didn't understand you were talking about explorer as well. "apply to all folders" works for me, but i guess you are having some problem about it changing randomly

I have XP and I don't have any of these problems. My folder views never change unless I change them and my status bar is always there.

Since I have the same problem (since I got XP ), I'll give this a bump. Maybe in the last 16 months, someone has figured this out.

no one said they did....including you.

I see most often, people have multiple explorer windows open, they make the change, and wonder why the change does not stick. it has to be done w/no windows open.

in conclusion....it's the computer that's stupid....not you.....right?? - Nick Burns

Even when following the typical "open window/IE, make change, close window" the disappearing status bar still happens. The only thing that seems to fix is an incorrect window size.

Icon views (ie: large, small, list, details) just started happening to my father. I've seen the same thing at other companies and other installs of 2000 - and some XP.

This is right there with the bug in IE where it doesn't remember the favicon.ico image. Which seems to affect (me at lesat) the latest version of Firefox.

Whatever...

My expectations from Windows are very low these days. I recently watched some streaming demos about Longhorn and while I'm intriguied by the WinFS file system, I think it's mostly an attempt to put a stop to industry-wide compatibility. But I don't know squat about it - maybe it's got some "compatibility mode" for other OSes to read the file system.

Rant done.
