Peer to Peer programs in college?

Are peer to peer programs like Overnet, WinMX, or BitTorrent commonly used in college? Do people just disregard the rule not to do it and get away with it? I'm worried if I try using one I'll be banned from the network after one night.. what is anyone else's experience with this? I use the programs to download clips and stuff like that, not retail software / media.

check your PMs

If you're worried, ask around your campus. And yes, filesharing runs rampant on college bandwidth

Yea, filesharing is fairly common on college campuses. BitTorrent and DirectConnect are some of the larger ones I've heard of - but I'm sure there are others. The main problem is staying off the RIAA/MPAA watch list - don't use any programs they're taking an interest in, just out of paranoia ;)

One of the more interesting file sharing concepts I've seen recently was MUTE - an anonymous P2P network. I'll try to dig up the link.

The college I go to (Tennessee Tech) actually has p2p blocked from accessing the internet, but there are programs known as lan crawlers that will search for shared files over the network. The down side is that there aren't as many files available, but the upside is that you are transferring the file over the network which means you can download an entire movie in less than two minutes on a 10/100 Mbps network connection. The crawler I use is known as MP3 Voyeur. If you do a yahoo search for it and just come up with porn sites, try switching the u and the e in voyeur, I can't really remember which way it is spelled right now. The program is free by the way. I don't think that the RIAA/MPAA watch for this program since it just scans over the LAN, but if anyone knows otherwise let me know.

If you can use p2p more power to you.

Here's the place to download MUTE.
http://mute-net.sourceforge.net/
I've used it once in a while, I'm more of a fan of BitTorrent but then again I only download unlicensed anime.

At the beginning of last year I came across my school completely blocking Kazaa and pretty much everything else. It took days of my time and many other people on the TFP who tried to help me out. Then one day I stumbled across Ares. www.softgap.com I perfer it more than Kazaa lite now. This is what I know works foresure, because of the way it is programmed. Also, BitTorrent would occasionaly work.

There's probably a direct connect hub on the lan, ask around....

My college has a lot of the P2P programs blocked in the dorms, but everything works great from the public labs. As long as you don't get caught ;). Of course, all my school would do if they caught me would be to kick me out of the lab... you may want to check rules at your own school before trying that.
