A couple o' FireFox questions
I have been using the new FireFox for a couple of weeks now (after the latest Web virus problem). I am using V.0.9 (not 0.9.1)
There a couple of things that I have not been able to figure out: 1) Regarding extensions. How do you use the extension after it has been installed. I downloaded and installed a couple and can't find them. I would like to use them but have no idea where they are. 2) The main problem I seem to be having regards refreshing. IE seemed to do it automatically, but with FireFox, sometimes hitting reload takes several clicks. I like the feature in IE that made it automatically look for new information. Other than that, Firefox seems pretty cool. I noticed that there is a newer version than the one I have. Should I update and if so, how (update under options didn't do anything). Thanks.... |
when you install an extension you need to restart the browser. then goto tools/extensions. right click on the extension you installed and goto options.
as for refeshing. mine seems to work fine. |
Yeah, I tried that. "Options" is grayed out for all my extensions.
The one I am trying to use, BugMeNot, is supposed to offer user names and passwords for sites I don't want to register for (i.e. New York Times). I just can't figure out how to get the extension to work. I'm gonna try Mozilla's website again. Thanks |
See if you can find a BugMeNot website. Extensions are not official parts of the browser (hence being extensions) so you probably won't find official support for any. You can try the MozillaZine forums as well for information. I wish I could help more but I haven't had a chance to upgrade from 0.8 yet due to various circumstances not related to Firefox.
As for the update, AFAIK you should update. Part of the reason the update thing you were trying to use isn't working is because there is a bug with it. It is a brand new feature as of this version. I don't think the bug is completely fixed even in 0.9. Keep in mind, anything under 1.0 is not a release TECHNICALLY intended for mass consumption. Doesn't mean it's not reasonable to use it by any means, but part of the reason it's not 1.0 is cause it's not as solid as they would like it to be and new features are still being added and dealt with. |
Thanks. It turns out that BugMeNot is kinda bunk for an extension. Oh well.
I did find an extension that will reload the page ever X seconds, pretty cool feature when you are waiting for new info on a page, forume, etc. Oh yeah and I did the update. Haven't noticed anything yet. So far I am happy with the switch. Thanks a lot... |

Type 'about:config' in the URLbar. Start to type 'frequency' into the Filter bar; you will see a preference for 'browser.cache.check_doc_frequency' Change that setting to '1', which means "never load cached version of page". |
redlemon, thanks for the tip! :)
