Car Stereo System Advice

I have a '93 Pathfinder with a horrible factory sound system still in it. I have about $300-400 to spend on new speakers and a deck. I'm not familiar at all with getting a car stereo or any of the components that go with it. I'd like to get something that can play mp3's and regular CD's.

What is a reliable and solid brand for decks and speakers?

What size speakers should I put in?

What nationally known businesses do a good job for installation (Best Buy, Audio Express, etc.)?

Is there anything I'm overlooking for questions? Any help in this matter would be great. Even if it's what you put into your car or what you've been lusting after. Thanks in advance, everyone.

check out crutchfield.com, they have a sizing chart for your vehicle, and all of their head units come with the mounts and it also comes with a wiring harness. I installed all my stereo stuff myself, wasnt too hard at all.

Keep the same size of speakers for now. Any upgrade to a good known brand will be better than the stuff most automakers dump in there anyway.

As for installers, they will be different all over. There are some terrible installers at places you would expect more from. If you would like somebody to do it for you, ask to take a tour of their install bay. They'll give you crap that they can't and are legally bound and all that. Its crap. Tell them if they are going to work on your car, you want to get an idea of their work. Be cool, they'll be cool. If they blow you off, take your hard earned cash somewhere else!

I would agree with Confederate, Crutchfield is pretty helpful. A buddy of mine purchased his system off of there and he go the instal kit and harnesses made it pretty easy to install your self.

If you can get a buddy to do the install for you, check out ebay. Bought a Kenwood MP3 deck for $100 less than retail.
