component video (Y Pr Pb) problem

I’m having trouble getting the picture right, i pass the signal from the DvD player to the TV with component video but the picture is tinted red, as if it lost the other channels of color. I know the TV is good because i am using component video from my PS2, and I’m pretty sure the DvD player is good, i took it back and had it replaced and it still has the trouble, as i also did with the wires.

Any other things i can try to get some color into my life?

To test:

Run a SVideo cable from your DVD to TV. This will rule out the TV and DVD player.

all I can think of is that either the Pr or Pb cable is not plugged in all the way.

Well, since you said the PS2 works with component the problem must be with the DVD player. Is there a setting for the player somewhere that controls the video output? They're often hidden in a sub-menu somewhere.

I had almost the same problem when I got a new tv and component video wires for my PS2. However it was blue instead of red and with my PS2, not DVD player. Unfortunately, I just ended up taking the stuff back. I have no idea what my problem was and have basically no idea what your problem is (since we probably did similar things wrong)

Is there a switch on the back of the player to enable the component vid out?

yodapaul 06-28-2004 02:35 PM

This is what I do when this problem appears.

Go to the DVD player and un-plug the RED and the Blue, then check your picture, it should be black and white. Next plug in the blue, that will add some Blue to the picture. Lastly, plug the RED back in and now you should have a complete picture.

One question, did you plug the playstation into the same input that the dvd was in? I ask because I have seen one input go bad on large TVs, it doesn't happen often but it does happen.

Dilbert1234567 06-28-2004 05:14 PM

ok i unpluged the red and blue and it is black and white

i plug the red in and its red

but when i plug the blue in it is still just red

i plugged the blue into the red and its blue

but when i plug the red into the blue its still just blue.

i think the blue port is dead, but on 2 difrent DvD's

i think they gave me the same one back ...

You took the blue plug and put it into the red jack on the back of your dvd player and got the blue picture?? I think im confused.

Dilbert1234567 06-29-2004 09:17 PM

i sent the red signal over the blue line, and the blue signal over the red line.

Halx 06-29-2004 09:25 PM

I think the ports on your TV are screwed

OK and then you got a red picture, correct? Then since you already tried using a different component wire, I agree with Halx, get your tv looked at.

the TV works just fine with my PS2 using component

yodapaul 07-02-2004 04:33 AM

Have you used the ps2 on the SAME tv input as the dvd?

Dilbert1234567 07-02-2004 09:10 AM

yes ive used both component with the PS2

yodapaul 07-02-2004 05:06 PM

Then the cable that you are using to go from the DVD to the TV is bad, OR your DVD player is bad. I would get a cheap component cable and use that as a test on the DVD player. If you then still get the same type of picture then your DVD player is bad.

Other than that I can't help you much, I'm sorry.

ubertuber 07-02-2004 06:19 PM

Dilbert,

Does your DVD player have an option to send an RGB signal over your component inputs? Some players can use the component inputs for either RGB or Y Pr Pb, with the selection being made in the menu somewhere.
