Thanks for your help: and a new question.
Well, I finally ordered my new computer parts. I got an AMD 64 3400+, and an ATI X800 XT. I have another question though.
I recently bought a GIG of PC 2700 DDR RAM for my system as it is now. The new board I am getting with the chip can take up to 3200. Asus K8V is the board I believe. My question is : should I go ahead and upgrade my RAM or will the 2700 be fast enough for now? Thanks |
Depends on what you're gonna do with it.

Gaming.....lots and lots of gaming

Well, then upgrade the RAM. You should always put as much in as you can, especially if it's for gaming. The 400 MHz vs the 333 will make a significant enough difference. Just make sure to get good RAM, too.

Ok thats what I thought the answer would be. Thanks a lot
|
i'm jelous, you just got pretty much the same computer setup that I want, but i'm lacking the money to buy it anytime soon.

You really need to get PC3200 RAM because the FSB of your processor is 200 MHz (400 MHz FSB in marketing terms). PC2700 is only 333 MHz, so your processor will run out of synch with the RAM. I'd get PC3200 ASAP.

Thanks Lasereth, I did some more reading and found out basically what you said, however I didnt understand most of it lol. So thanks for the more down to earth explanation and Ill order my RAM soon

just to clear it up, it's not that your processor is out of sync, it's just that it's capable of more than 2700 ram will allow.
since in gaming the majority of the video processes are offloaded to the video card, I would say the video card is really the most important factor here, which has been nicely taken care of. your optimum performance from your system will be from pc3200 ram. are you going to notice a huge difference between 2700 and 3200 in gaming? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, you might notice a small difference. But the real question is: is money a factor, especially since you said you recently bought the 2700 ram. If money is a factor you can be good with the 2700 for a while. If money ain't a thang, or you have someone to buy your old ram, then grab some 3200 ram. Hope that helps you some and just doesn't make this more cloudy for you hehe. |
