Web Hosting
Hey all,
I am looking for a somewhat small place to store a webpage - I am basically just designing a website for my Church and need probably no more than 50-75 megs of storage, but do need quite a bit of bandwidth (more than one would think for a church page probably). FP Extentions would be nice but are not necessary. I was just wondering if anyone has stumbled across a great deal or just happen to know of a really good hosting service. Thanks! ps. It must be www.yourname.com hosting :) No sub-domain stuff |

the tiny plan: -> 75 MB -> 3 GB bandwidth -> $30/year one of my sites is one their 'Super' plan and it has been very solid for me with outstanding support. Quote:

ignore~ posted a crappy website not worth reccomending, i'll re-edit this with a better site when I wake up.

www.powweb.com
I use them for my business site. 5gb of transfer per DAY should be more than enough for what you need, and at less than 7 bucks a month, it's a good price too. |
www.best-machine.com
www.hostforweb.com I use both for personal and business hosting. A colleague recently recommended www.1and1.com. |
Search these forums... There have been several threads about this before, with lots of good suggestions for hosts. :)

I also posted a thread a few weeks ago to discuss a host offering a plan that cost less than $1 per month. edit: That took all of 10seconds to find under the search terms: "cheap host" and its $0.17 month. link: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...ght=cheap+host |

I am very partial to ev1servers.net
I've been there for over a year using a dedicated linux box. $99 gets you 700GB of transfer. That ought to wet anyone's DL whistle. |
Just incase anyone was wondering, i setup a spreadsheet with all the features and prices for all of these listed so far. The one with the most Bandwidth and storage for the money is AN Hosting, which is what I think I will be going with.
50 gigs of transfer and 1.5 gigs of storage with free domain registration for life at $8 a month? Sounds good to me. |
That's a good deal, but you have to watch out for feature-poor plans that load up the numbers like that. Do you have your own cgi-bin? Front Page extensions? Logs? How's the control panel? And for $8 a month, how's the tech support?
My new company offers a REALLY high-quality hosting service that starts at $25/month. PM me if you want the details (I don't want to be posting sales stuff to TFP). |
Most free domain registration offers retain the rights to your domain name.

I've recently been looking into buying a domain and some web space as well. I know very little about web hosting though. All I want is a small personal website, with addiquit storage and bandwith.
At dreamhost.com (first link posted) they have a nice plan thats 7.95/month (very much in my price range), 800 MB disk space, and 40 GB bandwith, as well as 60 mailboxes. This is a perfect plan for me, except for the 60 mailboxes. Why in the hell would I need 60 mailboxes? Does this mean 60 e-mail addresses? I need like 2...maybe 3. Is having so many mailboxes costing extra? Would it be significantly cheaper if there was only 5 mailboxes or so, or should I just not worry about that? Also (please excuse my stupidity if it sounds so), with a plan/host like that, will I be able to use some simple FTP software like SmartFTP to upload my files? Or is an "FTP server" something completely differant? I'm also confused about if I get a www.yourname.com domain? Will it STAY like that, or will it redirect me to some much longer name? |
Those are 60 email addresses. Its cheap for them to do, so they throw it in to try to attract customers. You can give them to friends, family, whatever.
And yeah, you usually upload by FTP--thats the standard way of doing it. The domain name will stay like that, it isnt going to redirect unless you tell it to. |
I asked this same question here last November and took one of the suggestions. I would now like to pass that suggestion on.
http://www.surpasshosting.com I've got two shared servers with them and they are good. |

Thanks. |
Ok heres something I don't understand.
On some hosting websites, such as Dreamhost, they offer 800 MB storage, and 40 GB bandwith for 7.95 a month. But then theres some that offer only 150 MB storage and only 6 GB bandwith, for 10.95 a month! That doesn't make any sense. How can some companies offer so much for so cheap, but others offer so little for so expensive? Are the bigger ones not the entire truth, are they allowed to falsely advertise their numbers? |
