There are ton of things that could be the problem, but we'll start off easy.
There should be lights labeled Link or PC on the Router and the DSL modem. When its connected, do these lights go on?

Does the router have an uplink light?

Could be a matter of cables, having cross-overs when you should have stright through.. if you answer limited's question we'll know what direction to go

since you have DSL I'm assuming that you have not setup the PPOE portion of your router which is what makes the connection like your dialer does.

You may need to change the IP address of the router if it's set as the same as your modem. I had this problem. Your modem is probably set as 192.168.1.1 and if the default IP address of your router is the same they won't be able to see each other. If you go into the setup options on the router you should be able to change it. That could be the problem.
