tv as monitor

been tring to hook my TV up to my computer as a monitor for when i watch movies. I bought a adapter that takes standerd VGA out to video in that goes to my TV...but ever time i try and hook it up all it shows is it flashing on the screen. Im pretty sure the hertz is what is messing things up but i can not find a way to lower the hertz to what a TV would use. Any suggestions?

soopafreek 04-30-2004 07:14 PM

have you tried lowering the refresh rate through the display properties?

spived2 04-30-2004 07:14 PM

How about telling us a little more about your computer and the adapter you bought for starters so we can help you out.

Smackre 04-30-2004 07:19 PM

I tried lowering it. and the lowest it goes is 60hertz which still dont work.
here is my computer specs atm.
Motherboard=865pe Neo2 MSI
Processor=2.4 celerion
video im using atm=GF mx 440 PCI
video that i bought and will be here next week=GF ti4600
HD = 80gig Western Digital not sure on rpm
CD=philipse cdr/dvd....
PSU=not sure on brand but is 400 watt
lemme know if u need more

phredgreen 04-30-2004 07:26 PM

tell us about exactly what it was you bought to convert your image from vga output to something the tv can handle. links or pictures are good.

phredgreen 04-30-2004 08:02 PM

that looks like a device for converting an s-video or rca signal into a vga device, but i don't know if it would work properly in the reverse. you see how the non-vga ends are all female, so they are designed to take an input, not necessarily be an output.

Smackre 04-30-2004 08:04 PM

that place i found the pic said its made for converting VGA to Video TV / S-Video

phredgreen 04-30-2004 08:08 PM

okay. a thread on another board finds this:

Could some one please help.
I wish to make a cable which has vga on one end and rca on the other. I want to see if i can plug it in to the vga monitor on the computer case and straight into the T.V with out using a video out video card.

Could someone please let me know how to do this or send me some diagrams of how to do it and what i will need.

What you are suggesting cannot be done. The output frequency (refresh rate) of the VGA card is only suitable for a monitor and is totally different to that of a normal TV. You need a BT829 chip to convert the vga signal to PAL or NTSC.
but on further inespection, i've found a few ebay auctions for the item you're displaying, with this warning:
Quote:

Please, check your PC & Video Card manual or manufacturer to make sure that your VGA card has TV-Out function capability to ensure this cable will work for you!
so... does your videocard allow this?
on further further inspection, i find this, regarding your video card:

Quote:

Well, the MX-440 is a dated video card. It's several years old
Quote:

well the MX440 SE has always had problems, in other words it is one of Nvidias Cursed Video Cards
and so on..

you need a new video card, and i can almost garuntee that if you look at what you buy before you buy, you'll find yoruself a video card that has the proper outputs to send the signal to a television with ease.

Smackre 04-30-2004 08:10 PM

why would they sell adapter that wont work for what they are used for? is it like a scam or something?

Smackre 04-30-2004 08:15 PM

also when i get my new card it has a s-video port. And i have seen S-video to RCA cables. Do you think that would work? i have searched on goggle and havent found anything.

sailor 04-30-2004 08:39 PM

It is going to require some sort of software to do it. Laptops with an s-video port have it, I had to install it when I built my tivo, and whatever card you have is going to have to have it. Look for drivers from the manufacturer, thats where I got mine.

phredgreen 04-30-2004 08:44 PM

as far as s-video to rca, that's a cheap adapter, you'll probably pay as much as you did for that other hunk of cord you'll never use.

JohnnyRoyale 05-01-2004 07:26 AM

How are you switching between displays? Are you telling the Nvidia that your outputting to a TV, as opposed to a computer monitor? I know that when I output from my PC to a TV, I have to specify to the software drivers that it's a TV, cause TV draws the screen a LOT differently than a monitor does.
The TV uses frames, and draws half the screen (interlaced) whereas the montior draws every line every time (non-interlaced)

Smackre 05-01-2004 11:06 AM

i changed my monitor to generic TV....couldnt find any other drive to use

soopafreek 05-01-2004 03:05 PM

does your tv have an s-video "channel"? or other special channels that aren't for picking up tv stations (i.e. - "front" or "av1" or "av2"?

try changing channels?

Smackre 05-02-2004 02:32 PM

its video channel....
As u stated phredgreen i need an new video card. I have a ti4600 on its way....it wil be here some time next week. i was also looken on Ebay and i found this. Tell me what guys think of it. It costs 50$ so i dont wanna just buy it to find it dont work.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...126625600&rd=1
my NEw card has a DVI and a S-video out port. I was thinking of buying a cheap s-video to rca adapter and tring that.

mikec 05-02-2004 03:22 PM

your ti4600 will almost definitely come with an s-video to rca cable, unless you bought OEM.

I run an fx5200, with the s-video to rca cable, and the rca going to my tv. In display properties make the tv the 2nd monitor, and you have to check make 2nd display full screen. that puts anything in practically all media player's full screen to my tv.

Yeah, you have to do it in software. Something has to tell that card only to display at 320x240 resolution at 26 (IIRC) Hz refresh. Hence, software.

mikec 05-02-2004 04:25 PM

hehe, i'm confused if you quoted me cause you're agreeing or disagreeing. it's sunday night and I'm not firing on all cylinders hehe.

by software, it's just the graphic drivers for the vid card. you have to have the computer shut down when you connect the output of the card to your tv input, otherwise you'll have to reboot for the computer to see it..

monitor 1 should be your computer monitor,
http://www.pchelpsource.com/forum/pics/display01.jpg

monitor 2 should be your tv, at 640x480
http://www.pchelpsource.com/forum/pics/display02.jpg

Then with nvidia cards, you have to turn on clone display...
http://www.pchelpsource.com/forum/pics/display1.jpg

and finally, set your 2nd monitor to be your full screen device.

i just set up dual monitors today. i also have a video out on my new(pci...i hate pci) video card, but i have no idea how to set it up so i can watch dvd's from my cpu on my tv yet.

i dont know where i am going with this i just wanted to let you know that u are not alone. i am working on the same thing...

Smackre 05-05-2004 01:20 PM

got my new ti4600 today....got it installed and stuff...didnt come with dvi or svideo cable so i gotta order them. So ill try and hook both these up later

mikec 05-05-2004 01:41 PM

sounds like you got OEM. radio shack should have what you need, if you want instant gratification heheh.

Confederate 05-05-2004 02:23 PM

just a quick note, the quality of using the TV compared to a monitor is a lot worse, unless the font is really big, you probably wont be able to read it.

Smackre 05-05-2004 05:44 PM

i want it for movies and such...not realy everday work...just stream Dvd's and movies threw it....also so i can record stuff i do on the computer on vhs's.

Smackre 05-05-2004 08:05 PM

all i gotta say is duel monitor is fuken amazing...not sure how i did anything without it !

Smackre 05-07-2004 11:03 AM

well i got dvi-agp adapter and s-video adapter today. Dvi-vga works. So now i can remove my old video card and just run 1 card. But some reason the Svideo cable i bought dont fit into my card. Im gonna half to look on the net for a new one.

Confederate 05-07-2004 02:02 PM

yea I am running three right now, 4 with the TV, it's great it may be overkill for the stuff I do, but it sure is handy

Crack 05-07-2004 06:31 PM

I tried this for a night, didn't ever look right after trying pretty much everything... ehh
