IE crashes at start up.
Disclaimer: I don't like IE, I only use it when I have too. Like in this case. So don't tell me to use Mozilla/Firefox
I have this problem at work, when I start IE I get "IEXPLORE.exe has encounter a problem and will shut down. A error log has been generated." Looks to me the only way to fix this is to reinstall IE. But how do I do this? I can't get to Windows update. Figured since it's IE 5.0 I can just upgrade it and that should fix it. I've tried to use Mozilla to down load it but all I can find are patches and service packs for IE 5.5 or higher. I'm thinking that I may have a cd somewhere with IE 5.5 around and I may try that. Any other suggestions? |
I would try scanning the computer with Adaware and or Spybot. If you have some nasty piece of spyware in there it can cause IE to error out when it loads.

You should be a ble to get the IE 6 installer with Mozilla. It is just a small installer that gets everything from the web.
I agree with Cryptie in that it may be a spyware problem. What OS are you using? The latest service pack should have everything you need as well. |
It's Win2k SP3 I belive.
Can't get the service packs cause Windows update gets an error also. I can use Explorer to get into the web by putting in an address. But after it changes to IE I get a crash about 2-3 pages in. Ran Spybot but still no luck. First thing that came to mind. |
I had this exact problem a few weeks ago. I ran Scandisk and Defragmented my hard drive and it started working again. Maybe that'll work for you too.

edit: This is the direct link to the IE6 SP1 download. |
Thanks GoT
I'll try that next time I'm over there which wont be till Sat :( |
Well I did IE6 sp1 and it would start IE with an error but let me restart it without one so now it's usable.
Didn't get a chance install Win2k SP4 but I did run Spybot and found nothing worthy of suspision. Thanks GoT. Those links helped out alot. MS download search feature on the site kinda sux. |
