Reel to Reel to DVD
 

So my Mom was asking me if there was any way to convert some home videos made back in 1975 or so (recorded on reel to reel), to CD or DVD.

She thinks i'm a computer genious cause if i can't figure somethig out just ask on the good old tfproject.....

don't let me down.....

The tricky part is going to be getting the video from the reels to the computer. Once its there, there is plenty of DVD authoring software that can be used to get it how you like it and then burn it.

I dont know of any ways off the top of my head to get it to the computer though.

convert it to videotape first, than from video rip it to your computer.

i have no idea how to do any of these things though...

well i would get a minidv camcorder ... setup a dark room with the reel, a good screen and the camcorder all mounted in a way where they wont move at all... point the camcorder at the screen press record on the camcorder and play on the reel

then it should be pretty easy to get it on the computer and to dvd...

There are companies that do this, but they might cost a little.

JStrider's idea might be best though.

If you want to keep the best resolution possible you need to find a news station in your area and or a post-production house to convert the reel to a BETA and then have them convert it to a DVD.... it might cost some money but it is definately worth it, Unless done by a PRO with professional equipment, any kind of "transfering" wether it being by shooting it with a camcorder or transfering it to VHS might almost make it unviewable and or the audio would be distorted.

Personally, I would avoid creating a middle generation. Loss can only occur. JStrider has what seems to be the best idea, and I would imagine renting a digital version of that video camera would help when you transfer it to a disc medium.
