Vaio

I'm looking to buy a Sony Vaio TR series notebook computer. I just have a few questions about it.

Where's the best place to buy one (online or off)?

Are they reliable?

I don't deal with hertz, so how fast is it? Do programs open quickly, or is there a wait?

If there's a better sub-notebook out there under $2000, what would you recommend?

And, what's a USB 2 port?

WarWagon 03-13-2004 12:09 AM

You won't beat online pricing, plain and simple.

USB 2.0 ports have come into play as of recent. They look just like your standard USB 1.1 port, but are substantially faster. I REALLY wish I had them when I was ghosting my hard drive.

USB is the port itself.. 2 is the newest version just faster data tranfer through it.. i havent heard anything bad about sony laptops..

You will definitely pay for the Sony name....

Don't get a Vaio!! The ones I've used are terrible. If you are going to spend 2000 bucks on a laptop, get a Hewlett-Packard (or alienware if you can afford it).

My friend's HP Laptop is the coolest fucking thing I have ever seen in my entire life.

I can't really give any recommendations for laptops, but I do have to suggest to get the damn service plan that comes with them. Two of my friends got incredibly expensive laptops, and both shitted out a month after they got them. PLEASE get a service plan or warranty on it!

I've owned 2 Sony laptops and always been happy with them.

I don't reccomend buying something like that online, except maybe from Sony, because if you do have a problem initially its a big pain in the ass dealing with an online company.

I got a Vaio laptop about six months ago, and I've been pretty happy with it. No major problems (or none that I couldn't fix myself, at least...)

From the small amount that I've used it, their web-based support seems a little lacking. I get the impression that since Sony is so huge and their computers are just a small part of the company, they don't go all out for things like tech-support. So if you're not so tech-savvy or whatever, you might want to go with a more "user-friendly" company.

I have not owned one myself, but used a couple and have heard little to nothing negative about SONY laptops.

I am kind of partial to SONY though, I have 2 PS2's a CyberShot digital camera, a SONY cordless home phone, a SONY AIBO (yes yes i know they are expensive but hey i wanted it).

DOWN WITH VAIO!!!

They are awful machines. Pure and simple.
My mother's Sony Vaio freezes up at least 3 times a day. No Cntrl + Alt + Del works, everything frozen. She has been on numerous pointless hours with Vaio support on the phone to no avail. She has reformatted the HDD twice and the same thing happens.

Ok here's my deal with sony Vaio's..

Desktops are junk.......but I do own a sony vaio laptop and I love the damn thing! It's been reliable as hell and has took a beating....I would definately recommened it

thephuse 03-13-2004 01:50 PM

wow... talk about mixed reviews :D

MontanaXVI 03-13-2004 04:14 PM

thats what we here for :)

merlin 03-13-2004 05:21 PM

maybe your problems aren't related to the fact that it's a VAIO....
i just know that they are rather expensive, the sony name i mean. sony does have a lot of software for video and multimedia though.
if it were me with 2k to spend, i'd go for a (you won't hear this a lot from me) emachines. their laptops are actually quite nice, Athlon 64 3000+, 512mb ram, 60gb harddrive, radeon 9600pro graphics, and a dvd burner all for $1550! that's a lot of computer.
someone also mentioned that you won't beat online pricing...well i woudln't be too sure. retail stores offer nice rebates on a lot of stuff, although i haven't actually paid a close attention to the prices. good luck on your lappy

www.emachines.com

oh, also, do you realize that alot of laptop changes are coming very soon? i would wait for new stuff to come out and then decide on what to buy, like pci-express and better graphics systems.

well, my family already has a damn good HP laptop, but I really want a subnotebook(see more at www.kemplar.com) to take to class. Subnotebooks are way llight, and compact. I dont think people understood when i said "subnotebook", so I clarified.

Also, the TR3 is on www.kemplar.com, along with specs. 7 hour battery!

propaganda 03-13-2004 08:32 PM

I havn't used a subnotebook Sony Vaio but I've seen them. It seems like their battery would be a major pain. Its just like a tube attached to the back of the computer. Doesn't seem like it would have a very long life either. But then again those things are incredibly thin.
